Chapter 5 - The Threshold

Julian released my wrist as if it had burned him, stumbling back a step as Maya handed me the legal document.

I scanned the first page under the harsh light of the foyer. Marcus Vance hadn't waited for Monday morning. Using his position as board chairman and backed by a consortium of secondary institutional investors, he had filed an emergency injunction claiming that my medical leave and recent emotional trauma rendered me temporarily incapacitated, demanding a court-appointed conservatorship to manage my voting shares.

It was a brilliant, ruthless, and entirely illegal corporate maneuver designed to strip my power before I could even step foot in the boardroom.

Julian stared at the papers in my hand, a slow, grim realization dawning on his face. “He’s cutting us both out,” Julian breathed, his voice hollow. “Marcus isn't trying to save the company. He’s executing a hostile takeover for the venture capital firm in Zurich. He used me to drain the accounts, and now he’s using my scandal to seize your shares.”

“And you handed him the knife, Julian,” I said, my voice dangerously calm.

Before Julian could respond, the security buzzer at the front desk chimed through the intercom, followed by Arthur Sterling’s voice over the speaker.

“Evelyn, are you decent? We have a federal marshal downstairs with a warrant for Marcus Vance’s office at Vale Meridian.”

Julian froze, turning his head toward the intercom speaker in sheer disbelief. “A warrant? On what grounds?”

I walked past Julian, picked up my coat from the back of the sofa, and slipped my arms into the sleeves. I looked at my ex-husband—broken, cornered, and entirely irrelevant to the war that was now being fought.

“On the grounds that Maya didn't just find internal emails, Julian,” I said quietly, adjusting my collar. “She found the wire transfer receipts connecting Meridian Holdings directly to Marcus’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands—receipts that were automatically mirrored to the federal financial crimes task force the moment you tried to access your corporate email from the penthouse.”

Julian stared at me, the final remnants of his arrogant CEO facade shattering completely. He looked smaller, older, and utterly defeated.

“You set the trap for Marcus,” Julian whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. “You knew about the Delaware LLC before I even walked through that door.”

“I told you,” I said, walking toward the door where Arthur and the federal marshals were waiting in the hallway. “You built your empire on sand, Julian. And the tide came in.”

I stepped out into the hallway, leaving Julian standing alone in the quiet apartment, staring at the empty space where his life had just unraveled.

Arthur stood by the elevator, holding a fresh brief. “The federal judge signed the emergency asset freeze five minutes ago. The board meeting is still scheduled for 9:00 AM, Evelyn. But Marcus won't be chairing it.”

“Good,” I said, pressing the elevator button as the metal doors slid open, revealing the bright morning light of the city below. “Let’s go take back my father’s company.”
