Chapter 7 - The Breakfast Table

The private dining room on the top floor of the Carlyle Hotel felt worlds away from the sterile corporate tension of Bennett Holdings. Martin Hale sat across from me, nursing a black coffee while he stared down at the documents Naomi had laid out between the silver breakfast silverware.
The morning sunlight cut through the tall windows, glinting off the coffee pot as the chairman turned page after page of my father’s final addendum.
"Arthur Vance kept this under seal?" Martin asked, his voice low and raspy with disbelief. He looked up at me, his eyes searching my face. "Your father never mentioned this side agreement to the executive committee. Not a word."
"My father knew Adrian’s ambition outpaced his loyalty," I said calmly, pouring myself a cup of hot water with lemon. "He built a safety valve in case Adrian ever tried to leverage the company against the family name. Adrian triggered it the moment he took out that margin loan on the Brooklyn property."
Martin shook his head slowly, rubbing his temples. "If I present this to the board at today’s emergency session, the merger with tech logistics won't just be delayed—it will collapse entirely. Our institutional partners have already expressed nervousness about Adrian’s leadership style. This will be the final straw."
"Good," I said without hesitation. "We don't need a merger built on fraudulent financing and lies, Martin. Bennett Holdings survived forty years of steady growth because my father built it on solid ground. Adrian turned it into a casino."
"And Adrian himself?" Martin asked, leaning back against the upholstered chair. "He’s still scheduled to attend the session. He believes he can bully the board into pushing the vote through before noon."
"Let him try," I replied, setting my cup down. "Let him walk into that room fully convinced he still holds all the cards. When he hits the wall, I want to be sitting right across from him."
An hour later, the black sedan dropped us off at the corporate headquarters. The atmosphere in the executive corridor was electric. Staff members whispered in small knots near the coffee bar, casting nervous glances toward the executive suite. Word of an impending leadership crisis had clearly leaked past the boardroom doors.
When I pushed open the double doors of the boardroom, Adrian was already standing at the head of the long table. He was leaning forward, his hands flat against the mahogany, arguing fiercely with Arthur Vance—who had been brought out of retirement specifically for this session.
Celeste stood a few feet away, her tablet open, her face pale.
Adrian stopped mid-sentence as the door clicked shut behind me. He straightened slowly, a dark, triumphant smile spreading across his face.

"Well, look who decided to show up," Adrian said, his voice dripping with condescension. "I was just telling Arthur that your little stunt yesterday is about to blow up in your face. The SEC inquiry is moving forward, Claire. You’re listed as a primary beneficiary on the disputed asset transfers. If you don't drop the proxy revocation right now, you'll be answering federal investigators before your baby is born."
