Chapter 9 - The Corporate Predator

"Mrs. Montgomery, what a delightful, if entirely predictable, surprise," Victor drawled, his voice carrying the smooth, cultured cadence of a man who owned every room he entered.

I froze, staring at him. "You... you represent Monica?"

"I represent Apex Holdings," Victor corrected smoothly, stopping two feet away while his junior associate held open a leather briefcase. "And as of late Friday afternoon, Apex Holdings purchased the entire commercial mortgage debt underlying the commercial and residential zoning blocks on your side of Oak Ridge Lane. Which includes your little apple and pear orchard."

The courtroom lobby seemed to tilt on its axis.

"That's impossible," I breathed, backing up a step. "My property is privately owned free-and-clear residential land. Daniel paid off the mortgage five years before he died."

"The residential deed is yours, yes," Victor smiled, his eyes gleaming with cold calculation. "But the agricultural water runoff easement, the access road, and the municipal utility corridor running directly beneath your orchard? Those are commercial holdings tied to the old Vanderbilt industrial trust. A trust that my firm now controls."

He leaned in close, lowering his voice so the clerk couldn't hear.

"Monica is just a petty, annoying distraction used to keep you looking at the fence line," Victor whispered softly. "While you were fighting over a few stolen apples, my developers were filing the final eminent domain conversion papers for the entire valley. By the end of the week, this courthouse is going to rezone your property as industrial commercial transit land."

He patted my shoulder condescendingly, the way a teacher might comfort an uninformed child.

"Take my advice, Claire. Pack your kids' bags, sell the timber for firewood, and take whatever sliding-scale relocation payout the county offers you. Because you are fighting an empire."

With that, Victor turned on his heel and strode out toward the marble steps, his associate trailing briskly behind him.
