Chapter 9 - The Noon Deadline

By 11:15 AM, the atmosphere in the upstairs living room felt like a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding.
Marcus had been forced out of the house by two local sheriff's deputies whom Rebecca had called as a precautionary measure. He was currently sitting in his black sedan at the curb, making frantic phone calls to lawyers and politicians, realizing that his entire multi-million-dollar development empire was about to collapse under the weight of his own past corruption.
Michael and Addison were huddled together on the floral sofa, their previous arrogance completely shattered.
"Mom," Michael pleaded, his voice breaking as he looked up at me standing by the fireplace. "Mom, please. If the state seizes Vanguard, Marcus is going to drag everyone down with him. If you give Rebecca that flash drive, the collateral damage is going to hit our family accounts too. We’ll lose everything."
"You already lost everything, Michael, the moment you decided to steal from your father and collude with his worst enemy behind our backs," I said coldly.
Addison burst into tears—real, desperate tears of rage and humiliation. "You're a bitter, cold-hearted old woman! You're destroying your own children over a dead man's grudge!"
"No, Addison," Sarah said quietly from the doorway, her arms crossed. "She's finally cleaning up the mess you both made."
My phone buzzed on the mantelpiece.
It was an unknown number with an Albany area code.
I picked it up and pressed answer.
"Mrs. Patterson?" a crisp, authoritative voice asked. "This is Assistant Attorney General Vance. We’ve received the data transfer from your attorney regarding Vanguard Development. We are executing an immediate seizure and arrest warrant for Marcus Vance based on racketeering and corporate fraud."
"Thank you, Counselor," I replied evenly.
"One more thing, Mrs. Patterson," the voice continued, dropping into a more hesitant register. "When our forensic team decrypted the master ledger attached to the drive, we found a secondary file coded under your name. It references a third party—someone inside your immediate circle—who helped funnel corporate funds to Vanguard over the past six months."
My eyes slowly lifted from the phone, scanning the room until they landed on the sofa.
Michael had gone completely rigid. Addison stopped crying, her breath catching in her throat as she stared fixedly at the floor.

"Who?" I asked into the phone.
