Chapter 5 - Smoke and Whispers

The bullet punched through the center of the oak paneling, showering the study in splinters and dropping the first intruder in the hallway with a muffled gasp.

Alarms wailed through the mansion—a shrill, ear-piercing siren that triggered the emergency lockdown protocols. Heavy steel shutters dropped over the library windows with a deafening crash, plunging the outer rooms into artificial amber light.

"They're using thermal breaching charges on the kitchen doors!" Grace shouted over the screaming sirens, dropping low behind the heavy mahogany desk as return fire chewed through the plaster walls, showering them with white dust.

Dominic lunged forward, grabbing the tactical vest and slipping his arms through the straps with practiced speed. He slammed a fresh magazine into his Sig Sauer, the slide snapping home with a sharp metallic crack. He didn't look at Vince. The accountant had already slipped through the concealed panel into the panic room, the heavy steel door sealing shut behind him with a hydraulic hiss.

Let the rat run. Vince was trapped inside a concrete tomb with no network access and no exit. Dominic had bigger problems.

"The girls," Dominic said, his chest heaving as adrenaline surged through his veins. "The panic room in the east wing nursery. Is it secure?"

"It's tied into the house generator," Grace yelled back, firing another three rounds down the corridor to suppress an advancing gunman. "If they cut the main power grid, we have four minutes before the vault doors unlock automatically!"

Dominic’s heart seized. The main power box was located in the basement—the exact area where Sal and his security detail had been ambushed. If the hit squad made it to the basement and cut the lines, Olivia, Sophie, and Nora would be completely exposed to a dozen professional killers.

"Move!" Dominic roared.

He burst out of the study first, firing two rapid shots down the dim corridor. A masked man in tactical black armor tumbled backward, dropping a submachine gun onto the Persian runner. Dominic vaulted over the body, his boots hitting the polished floor as he sprinted toward the grand staircase.

Grace was right behind him, covering his six, her pistol spitting fire at a second gunman who appeared near the portrait of Dominic’s grandfather. The oil painting took three direct rounds, shredding the stern face of the old shipping magnate into canvas ribbons.

They reached the landing just as the overhead lights flickered violently, hummed, and died.

Total darkness consumed the mansion, save for the flickering red emergency strips along the baseboards.

From the top of the stairs, a tiny voice cut through the chaos.

"Daddy?"

Dominic looked up. Nora stood at the edge of the nursery landing, silhouetted against the emergency light, holding her favorite stuffed rabbit in one hand. And standing right beside her, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker like a spear, was seven-year-old Olivia—her eyes wide, fearless, and blazing with the exact same fury as her father's.

"Get back inside, girls!" Dominic shouted, taking the steps three at a time.

Before he could reach the landing, a heavy boot heel crunched on the glass of the skylight directly above the grand staircase.

Dominic whipped his head up. A shadow dropped from the ceiling rafters, suspended by a tactical rappelling rope, swinging straight toward the nursery door where Grace and the children stood.

Grace raised her Glock, but the slide clicked dry on an empty chamber.

The masked intruder landed squarely on the upper landing, his assault rifle swinging around to level directly at Nora's chest.

Dominic raised his pistol, but at that exact second, a deafening explosion rocked the foundation beneath their feet, plunging the entire second floor into a cloud of blinding white smoke and choking dust.
