Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strategy

Elena didn't yell. She didn't argue, and she didn't reach for her phone to call Daniel.

She simply looked at her father with a steady, unblinking composure that made Arthur visibly uneasy. For a man who had spent decades manipulating people through panic and manufactured crises, her silence was more terrifying than any outburst.

“You assume the Navy doesn't already run routine financial and security audits on active-duty commanders,” Elena said evenly.

Arthur’s eyebrows twitched. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the fact that three weeks ago, before I deployed, I submitted a proactive security clearance recertification dossier to the Department of the Navy,” Elena lied smoothly, watching his expression carefully. “Part of that protocol requires a full forensic audit of all dormant corporate entities, past credit applications, and legacy family trusts to prevent foreign or domestic coercion.”

Mark shifted uneasily in the kitchen doorway. “Wait. You audited yourself before you left?”

“When you operate nuclear-powered surface fleets, Mr. Miller, you learn very quickly that unmanaged liabilities are vulnerabilities,” Elena said, turning her gaze toward him. “The moment a discrepancy appears on an active service member’s record—especially an identity fraud flag—the Naval Criminal Investigative Service doesn't wait for a civil suit. They initiate a federal investigation automatically.”

Arthur’s face lost its color. The confident posture he had maintained on the stairs evaporated.

“You’re bluffing,” Arthur muttered, though his voice shook. “You wouldn't invite an NCIS investigation into your own family. It would jeopardize your command.”

“It would investigate the origin of the fraud,” Elena corrected, stepping closer to the foot of the stairs. “And federal investigators have a very peculiar habit of tracing forged signatures back to the exact IP addresses, notarized seals, and banking terminals where they were executed. Tell me, Arthur—did you use your home computer in Tahoe to file those Reno bridge loans seven years ago?”

Arthur didn't answer. He gripped the wooden banister so hard his knuckles turned white.

“Because if you did,” Elena continued softly, “the digital forensics team won't just find a civil debt dispute. They’ll find a paper trail leading directly to a federal penitentiary.”

The silence in the villa became absolute. The lake wind outside seemed to die down, leaving only the low, steady hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Mark looked at Arthur, his eyes wide with sudden panic. “Arthur... you told me the corporate filings were clean. You told me Elena’s name was just a formality on paper!”

“Shut up, Mark,” Arthur hissed, his composure entirely gone.

Elena turned on her heel, walking toward the front door without looking back. She paused with her hand on the brass handle, glancing over her shoulder one last time.

“You have until noon tomorrow to hand over every physical document, hard drive, and digital backup you have regarding Mercer Holdings and my mother’s estate,” Elena said. “If a single paper is missing, I won't call Daniel. I’ll dial three numbers directly to the nearest naval base and let NCIS handle the cleanup.”

She pulled the door open, stepped out into the cold night air, and let it click shut behind her.
