Chapter 18 - The Fall of Vance

"What is the meaning of this?" shouted Julian Sterling, the senior representative of Vanguard Capital, leaping to his feet from the front table. "Arthur, are these records legitimate?"
Vance backed away from the podium, his face pale and glistening with sweat. "This is fabricated! It’s a desperate smear campaign engineered by a disgraced executive!"
"The records were certified at two o'clock this afternoon by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York," Declan stated coldly, stepping up to the microphone. "Mr. Vance has spent the last four years executing a systematic round-tripping scheme, defrauding this company of over forty million dollars while simultaneously attempting to extort my family."
"You have no authority here!" Vance snarled, losing all control, his polished veneer stripped away completely. "You concealed heirs! You violated Clause 44-B!"
"Clause 44-B requires concealment of heirs," I said, stepping beside Declan and meeting Vance’s furious glare with icy disdain. "Declan didn't conceal his heirs, Mr. Vance. You did."
Declan pressed the remote again. The projection shifted to an audio waveform. A recording began to play through the ballroom’s sound system—a recording recovered from the archived voicemail servers of Hawthorne’s executive suite from five years ago.
*“Julian, make sure the girl in Boston signs the non-disclosure. If Declan finds out she’s pregnant, the grandfather will rewrite the trust before he dies, and we lose our leverage. Keep them apart at all costs.”*
Vance’s own voice echoed through the massive chamber, unmistakable, clear, and damning.
A dead, horrified silence descended upon the ballroom.
Julian Sterling turned slowly to Vance, his expression one of profound disgust. "Arthur... you’re done."
"The board will convene an emergency session immediately," declared another director from the side table. "We vote to terminate Arthur Vance for gross criminal misconduct, effective this second."
Before Vance could respond, the heavy ballroom doors opened once more.
Four agents wearing dark suits and federal credentials walked into the hall, led by an Assistant United States Attorney. They moved with quiet, practiced efficiency down the center aisle, bypassing the stunned crowd and ascending the stage.
"Arthur Vance?" the lead agent asked, producing an official arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, securities fraud, and witness tampering. Please place your hands behind your back."
Vance looked wildly around the room, searching for an ally among the billionaires and power brokers he had cultivated for twenty years. Not a single person met his eyes. The world he had built on lies, manipulation, and greed had crumbled to dust in less than ten minutes.
As the steel handcuffs clicked around Vance’s wrists, he stopped beside me, his venomous gaze burning into mine. "You think you've won, Ms. Campbell?" he sneered in a ragged whisper. "You have no idea what secrets Declan’s grandfather buried. This company is a graveyard, and you just bought yourself a plot."
"Take him out," the federal agent commanded, leading Vance off the stage in full view of twenty news cameras.
The applause started slowly at first—a single set of hands clapping from the Vanguard table—before swelling into a thunderous standing ovation. The shareholders, the journalists, the board members were all cheering, acknowledging the young couple who had faced down an empire’s corruption and won.
Declan didn't look at the crowd. He turned to me, his eyes shining with unshed tears, and took my hand in front of the entire financial world.
"We did it," he whispered.
May you like
"No," I smiled softly, squeezing his fingers tightly. "We just cleared the ground. Now we have to build."
