Chapter 15 - The Forensic Audit

Evelyn Cross’s office sat on the fortieth floor of the glass tower overlooking the river—deliberately positioned two blocks higher than Hayes Holdings headquarters.

Evelyn herself was fifty-five, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, with silver-streaked hair and cold, calculating gray eyes. When I placed Daniel’s encrypted flash drive, Claire’s termination letter, and the 2018 non-disclosure agreement onto her conference table, she didn't smile. She slipped on a pair of frameless reading glasses and spent twenty uninterrupted minutes examining the pages.

"This is extraordinary," Evelyn finally said, tapping a red pen against Claire’s NDA. "Do you realize what this document actually is?"

"A payoff to hide an illegitimate child," I replied.

"It’s far worse than that for Eleanor," Evelyn said, sliding the paper toward me and circling paragraph three. "Look at the funding source. The fifteen thousand dollars a month paid to Claire didn't come from Eleanor’s personal checking account. It came from *St. Jude Heritage Holdings*. And who funded St. Jude?"

"Marcus said it was Eleanor’s private family trust."

"Marcus lied to you," Evelyn said coolly. "St. Jude Heritage was established in 1994 using the charitable tax-exempt endowment of the Hayes Children’s Healthcare Foundation. Eleanor diverted tax-sheltered nonprofit assets into a private trust, used that trust to purchase commercial property downtown, and then used the rental proceeds to pay off Daniel’s secret partner."

My eyes widened. "That’s tax fraud."

"That is federal charity embezzlement," Evelyn corrected, a sharp smile touching her lips. "If the state attorney general sees this, Eleanor won't just lose her advisory board seat. She’ll face a grand jury indictment. Daniel kept this document because it was his personal insurance policy against his mother. He knew that if she ever tried to cut him out entirely, he could threaten to expose the foundation’s ledger."

"And Eleanor knew it," I murmured, pieces of the puzzle falling rapidly into place. "That’s why she was so eager to have Marcus scrub Daniel’s laptop before the board took over. She wasn't trying to protect Daniel’s privacy. She was looking for this file."

"Precisely," Evelyn said. "She thought Daniel had the only copy. When Marcus found it on the drive, he was supposed to delete it. But Marcus forwarded it to you first—either out of sheer incompetence, or because Marcus was hedging his bets in case you ended up on top."

"So what happens tomorrow at the courthouse?" I asked.

Evelyn leaned forward, folding her hands over the documents. "Tomorrow morning at nine, Marcus expects you to sign the dissolution papers in the private conference room outside Courtroom 4B. Eleanor will be there, playing the grieving, supportive mother-in-law. They will hand you the custody agreement with the advisory board clause."

"And if I refuse to sign?"

"If you simply refuse, Marcus will ask the judge for a sixty-day continuance to review 'contested custodial assets,' during which Eleanor will use her judicial connections to file for emergency temporary custody of Noah, citing Daniel’s instability and your alleged corporate stress," Evelyn warned. "We cannot give them time to regroup. We have to strike before the judge even takes the bench."

"How?"

Evelyn tapped her intercom. "Sarah, bring in two copies of an Emergency Joinder Motion for Paternity and Fiduciary Disqualification. And call Claire Henderson. Tell her we need her and her son’s legal guardian paperwork notarized within the hour."

Evelyn looked back at me, her eyes gleaming with predatory intellect. "We aren't going to court just to finalize your divorce, Grace. We are going to petition the court to join Claire’s son, Leo, as a recognized legal heir of Daniel Hayes. Under state probate law, if an unacknowledged child is proven, all existing corporate trusts executed without his representation are automatically frozen."

"Eleanor’s advisory board clause becomes void," I breathed.

"Not just void," Evelyn said. "Eleanor’s entire legal foundation shatters. Daniel’s voting shares will be split between Noah and Leo. And because Leo is a minor without an appointed corporate guardian, the court will appoint an independent receiver—which will be Claire, represented by me."

I sat back in the chair, feeling the weight of the last three weeks finally lift into cold focus. Eleanor had thought she could sacrifice Daniel, discard Claire, and turn me into an obedient surrogate holding the crown for her next generation.

"Will Claire agree to this?" I asked. "She’s been hiding from Eleanor for four years."

"Claire called me twenty minutes before you walked into this office," Evelyn said softly. "She said you came to her apartment last night not with threats, but with the truth. She’s already signing the retainer."
