Chapter 135 - The Blood Line

Marcus raised his weapon, his eyes locking onto the center seam of the iron door, but I put my hand flat against his chest.

"Let me speak to him," I said.

Marcus looked down at me, the tension in his frame like a coiled steel cable. Slowly, he lowered the barrel an inch.

I stepped to the door, pressing my palm against the freezing metal. "You sent men with sledgehammers to destroy the only thing Dad left behind, Julian."

A soft, mournful sigh came through the iron. "Dad was a dinosaur, Elena. He lived by an archaic code of neighborhood loyalty that died the day the financial markets took over this city. I tried to build something that would outlast his shame. Do you have any idea how much power it takes to keep this state from tearing itself apart?"

"You stole forty million dollars from city workers' pensions and let your father die in a state penitentiary for it," I said, my voice hardening. "You didn't build power. You built a guillotine."

"I built an empire that protects this entire region!" Julian's voice flared, the polished veneer slipping for a split second before snapping back into controlled restraint. "And what did Marcus Vance build? A criminal enterprise that operates in blood and extortion. You think he’s your protector, Elena? Ask him about the fire on Pier 11 twenty years ago. Ask him whose signature cleared the shipping containers that put our father in the crosshairs of federal prosecutors."

I turned my head to look at Marcus.

Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't drop his eyes. "Your father knew the containers were marked, Elena. He took the delivery to keep your brother out of a federal indictment. I signed the transfer manifest because your father begged me to keep Julian's name off the ledger."

The revelation hit me like a blow to the solar plexus.

"Dad did that... for you?" I called through the door.

"Dad was weak!" Julian snapped, his voice now right against the steel. "He loved his sentimentality more than his future. But I am offering you an exit, Elena. Slide that blue box under the emergency seam. Walk out through the north subway access. I have a state trooper vehicle waiting to take you to a private estate in Dutchess County. You will have a new identity, full financial immunity, and five million dollars in an offshore trust."

"And Marcus and Anna?" I asked.

A cold pause hung in the subterranean air.

"Marcus Vance dies tonight," Julian said calmly. "And his wife goes back to the cold water where Pendelton should have left her. A governor cannot coexist with a kingpin who knows where the foundations are buried."

Marcus stepped up beside me. He didn't speak through the door. Instead, he pulled a remote detonator unit from Frankie's tactical vest, checking the digital readout with a calm, surgical precision.

"Marcus, what is that?" I whispered.

"Before we came down that chute," Marcus said quietly, "Frankie set three breaching charges along the support pillars of the municipal parking lot overhead. If your brother thinks he controls the ground in Hell's Kitchen, it's time he learns who laid the concrete."

He didn't wait for my permission. Marcus hit the red toggle on the transmitter.
