Chapter 18 - Key Seventy-Two

The storage facility sat on the industrial outskirts of Kingston, flanked by a gravel yard and a row of rusted shipping containers.
Emily sat in her station wagon, the engine idling, the heater blowing warm air against her shins. Sarah was at home with the girls, having insisted that Emily not go alone. But Emily had refused to let anyone else come.
In her purse was the brass key the hospital nurse had handed her in a plastic envelope two hours earlier. Eleanor Vance had slipped into a coma forty minutes after their phone call; the doctors doubted she would survive the night.
Emily turned off the engine, stepped out into the damp spring chill, and walked through the security gate.
Unit 204 was on the second floor of the concrete building. When she rolled up the corrugated steel door, the smell of damp cardboard and mothballs washed over her.
The unit was sparsely packed: two mid-century armchairs covered in dusty sheets, stacks of old architecture magazines, and four plastic totes labeled *Charles - Personal*.
In the far corner, behind a stack of framed prints, sat a small, green metal security box labeled with a piece of masking tape: *#72*.
Emily knelt on the cold concrete. The key slid smoothly into the lock. With a faint click, the lid popped open.
Inside lay three thick, cream-colored envelopes, tied together with a faded grosgrain ribbon. Beneath them was an old leather-bound diary and a smaller, white jewelry box.
Emily opened the first envelope.
It contained medical records dating back thirty-four years.
Emily skimmed the yellowed pages, her eyes catching phrases stamped in bold hospital font: *St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital, Dept. of Reproductive Medicine. Patient: Eleanor Vance. Spouse: Charles Vance.*
*Diagnosis: Complete bilateral tubal occlusion. Infertility protocol exhausted.*
Emily frowned, flipping to the second document. It was a formal private placement agreement dated June 1989.
*Biological Mother: Hannah Miller (Senior).*
*Biological Father: Charles Vance.*
*Adoptive Mother: Eleanor Vance.*
*Subject Child: Male infant, born June 12, 1989. Designated Name: Mark Charles Vance.*
Emily’s breath stopped.
The papers trembled in her hands. She read the lines three times, her brain refusing to process the black ink on the page.
Mark was not Eleanor’s biological son.
He was the biological son of Charles Vance and Hannah’s mother, Evelyn Miller.
Hannah was not Mark’s childhood friend. She was not merely his high school sweetheart or an old flame who refused to move on.

Hannah was his half-sister.
