Chapter 10 - The Next Shift

Three weeks later, the rain had finally given way to a crisp, golden Chicago autumn afternoon.
The front windows of Il Canto were sparkling clean, catching the afternoon sunlight as pedestrians bustled past on the sidewalk. Inside, the restaurant was closed for prep, the dining room smelling faintly of garlic, basil, and freshly baked bread.
Marco was standing by the host stand, checking reservations on his tablet, when the front door chimed.
I walked in wearing my usual black apron, holding a cardboard tray of coffees from the corner bakery.
"You're late, Chloe," Marco said without looking up, though a small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "And before you ask, table seven is booked for tonight, and yes, the VIP room is already reserved for a private party."
"I know," I smiled, setting the coffee tray down on the counter. "And I told you, I'm not waiting tables tonight."
Marco finally looked up, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? And what is the great Chloe Vance doing instead?"
"Consulting," a deep voice answered from the doorway.
Gabriel Costello walked into the restaurant, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase. Behind him walked Beatrice, wearing her signature pearl necklace and a bright red cashmere wrap, her eyes immediately locking onto mine with a warm, affectionate glow.
Beatrice's hands moved in a rapid, cheerful greeting.
Hello, my favorite translator. Are you ready to work?
I smiled, signing back fluidly without a moment's hesitation. Always, Beatrice. But my hourly rate just doubled.
Gabriel chuckled, walking over to the host stand and sliding a thick, official legal document across the counter toward me. It was the deed of partnership for the newly restructured Vance & Sons shipping corridor, now operating independently under joint security protocols with Gabriel’s logistics network. My father was back in an office downtown, managing the legitimate ledgers with a clean slate and a second chance at life.
"The board approved the transfer this morning," Gabriel said, looking at me with a mixture of professional respect and genuine gratitude. "The northern corridor is secure. Sterling is awaiting trial in a federal penitentiary with no bail. And my mother refuses to eat dinner anywhere unless you're the one checking the menu."
I picked up the document, running my fingers over the embossed seal. Everything had changed. The debt was gone, the rent was paid for years in advance, and the shadow that had hung over my family for five years had finally been lifted.
Yet, as I looked at Beatrice and Gabriel standing in the center of the restaurant where it all began, I knew I wasn't going to quit Il Canto. This was where the silence had broken. This was where I had found my voice again.
"Table seven wants the seafood risotto," I said, looking up at Gabriel with a dry smile. "And tell your mother her manners still need work."
Gabriel laughed out loud—a rare, genuine sound that made Marco drop his tablet in sheer astonishment.

"She says your sign language is getting sloppy," Gabriel translated with a smirk, offering his arm to his mother.
As they walked back toward the private VIP dining room, I picked up a fresh silver tray and followed them, stepping naturally into a world where silence was never empty, and every movement told a story.
