Chapter 10 - The Unfinished Ledger

The forensic audit of the Hale estate took twelve hours.

By the time the state investigators packed up their mobile servers and left the manor as dusk settled over the hills, the myth of Hale Enterprises' invincibility had been thoroughly dismantled. Box after box of physical ledgers, encrypted hard drives, and offshore banking records were loaded into the back of state transport vans. Preston had been detained for questioning regarding his signature on the fraudulent Cayman wire transfers, and Martin Voss had officially recused himself from the case after the state bar served him with formal disbarment proceedings.

I sat in my apartment living room alone, the city lights twinkling through the windowpanes as the quiet of the evening settled around me.

My phone rested on the coffee table beside a single cup of cold tea. The emergency asset freeze was secure, the state grand jury was formally impaneled for Tuesday morning, and my divorce proceedings were no longer a quiet civil dispute over alimony—they were front-page news across every major financial publication in the country.

Yet, as I looked at the reflection of my own face in the dark glass of the window, I knew the battle was far from over.

Vivian Hale hadn't panicked when the state troopers arrived. She hadn't screamed, she hadn't begged, and she hadn't made a single frantic phone call while the investigators hauled her private records out of the manor. A woman of Vivian's wealth and influence didn't build a twenty-year financial fortress without keeping a final, deeply buried backup plan in reserve—one that didn't rely on corporate shell companies, municipal bonds, or Martin Voss.

My phone buzzed against the wooden table.

It wasn't a news alert, and it wasn't a text from David or Marcus.

I picked it up. The screen displayed an incoming email from an encrypted, overseas domain with no subject line. I tapped the notification and opened the message.

Inside was a single scanned document—a birth certificate dated twenty-eight years ago, bearing my own full name, alongside a adoption clearance signature that had been filed under seal in a federal jurisdiction three states away, authorized by none other than Arthur Hale himself.
