Chapter 9 - Collision

The private pavilion at the Oak Brook country club sat nestled behind a dense perimeter of towering pines, its glass-walled lounge overlooking an empty, fog-shrouded golf course. At 7:45 AM, the morning mist was just beginning to burn off under a pale, wintry sun.

Marcus pulled the black bulletproof SUV to a smooth stop directly in front of the glass doors.

Dominic opened his door first, stepping out onto the wet pavement and scanning the perimeter with the cold, practiced eye of a man who had lived his entire adult life in the crosshairs. He turned back and offered me his hand.

I didn't hesitate. I placed my hand in his, letting him pull me out of the vehicle. My fingers were steady, wrapped around the heavy leather folder containing my mother’s journals and the incriminating photographs.

"Stay close to Marcus," Dominic instructed quietly, his eyes fixed on a single black sedan parked at the far end of the empty parking lot.

"I'm not hiding behind anyone today, Dominic," I said, adjusting the strap of my bag.

A tight, humorless smile touched his lips. "I wouldn't expect you to."

We walked up the wide stone steps together, the heavy glass doors sliding open automatically as we entered the sterile, luxurious lounge.

Richard Vance was already sitting at a mahogany table in the center of the room. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that matched Dominic's, his silver-streaked hair combed back with meticulous precision. Two private security guards stood rigidly near the back exit, but Vance waved them off with a single flick of his wrist as we approached.

Vance didn't look like a cornered rat. He looked like an executive holding a royal flush.

"Dominic," Vance said smoothly, standing up and buttoning his jacket as we reached the table. His cold, calculating eyes flicked past Dominic and locked directly onto me. "And you must be Sarah’s daughter. The resemblance around the eyes is... remarkably inconvenient."

"Save the corporate charm, Richard," Dominic said, pulling out a chair for me before taking the seat directly opposite Vance. He didn't offer Vance a handshake. "You're out of time. The ledgers from the sub-basement are already copied and secured off-site."

Vance gave a slow, thin smile. He didn't sit down. Instead, he placed both hands flat on the polished mahogany table and leaned forward slightly.

"You think this is about the ledgers, Dominic?" Vance asked, his voice dropping into a smooth, patronizing cadence. "You think a few handwritten pages from a dead woman and some offshore account numbers are going to undo fifteen years of legal restructuring?"

"They're enough to prove you laundered eighty million dollars through Sterling Industries before engineering the accident that killed my brother," Dominic replied, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Vance laughed—a dry, chilling sound that echoed off the glass walls.

"Julian was a fool," Vance said casually, as if discussing the weather. "He found the accounts, yes. He threatened to burn the entire family name to the ground just to protect his precious fiancée. But I didn't kill him, Dominic. I didn't need to."

My breath caught in my throat. I leaned forward across the table. "What are you talking about?"

Vance turned his cold gaze onto me, his smile widening into something predatory.

"Ask your mother, Ms. Bennett—oh, wait, you can't," Vance mocked smoothly. "Your mother didn't run away because Julian was killed. She ran away because she found out who really authorized the brake line tampering on Julian’s Mercedes."

The world seemed to stop spinning. The glass walls, the golf course outside, Dominic sitting right beside me—everything dissolved into a deafening roar in my ears.

"My mother..." I choked out, my hands gripping the edge of the table so hard my knuckles turned white. "My mother had nothing to do with it."

"Didn't she?" Vance pulled a small, sealed manila envelope from his breast pocket and slid it across the table toward me. "Your mother didn't just steal the offshore ledgers, Claire. She signed the transfer authorization for the hit on Julian’s car in exchange for a clean exit, a new identity, and enough cash to keep her and her bastard child hidden in Ohio for twenty-eight years."

I stared at the envelope as if it were venomous.

Beside me, Dominic slowly turned his head, his dark eyes shifting from Vance to my face with a look of absolute, devastating disbelief.
