Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Six months later, the federal courtroom in downtown Chicago was packed to capacity.

The trial had been swift, decisive, and devastating for the conspirators. Richard Thorne had been sentenced to fourteen years in federal prison for securities fraud, corporate espionage, and racketeering. Helen Vance, facing overwhelming evidence of financial exploitation and conspiracy, had received a twelve-year sentence, her high-society bridge clubs and luxury cruises replaced by the grey cinderblock walls of a maximum-security federal medical facility.

And Vanessa? Vanessa Vance sat at the defense table in a standard orange jumpsuit, her designer clothes and arrogant smiles entirely gone, listening impassionately as the judge handed down an eighteen-year sentence for wire fraud, identity theft, and child trafficking.

When the gavel finally struck its final, resounding blow, signaling the absolute end of their reign of deception, I felt no anger. There was only peace.

I walked out of the federal courthouse steps into the bright, warm June sunlight. Standing beside me on the granite landing were Clara, holding a happy, energetic eighteen-month-old Noah on her hip, and Lily, who was busy showing her aunt a shiny silver rock she had found in the courtyard garden.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen: an official notification from the county land registry confirming that the estate title, the family trust holdings, and my grandfather’s original homestead were now fully, irrevocably secured under my name and corporate guardianship.

“Daddy, look!” Lily called out, tugging on my jacket sleeve, pointing toward a bright yellow ice cream truck parked across the street. “Can we celebrate?”

May you like

I laughed, sliding my phone back into my pocket and looking down at my family—my real, unbroken family.

“Only if you save room for double chocolate,” I smiled, wrapping my arm around Clara’s shoulders as we walked down the courthouse steps together into the sunshine. “Let’s go home.”
