Chapter 9 - The Second Will

The courtroom murmurs swelled into an audible wave of chatter before Judge Henderson rapped his heavy wooden gavel twice to restore order.

“Counsel, state your appearance for the record,” the judge instructed, leaning forward over his mahogany desk.

The man in the tailored suit stepped up to the podium, opening his leather briefcase with a crisp snap. “Arthur Vance, Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio, Your Honor. We are intervening in this proceeding on behalf of the state’s corporate restitution and asset forfeiture division.”

Across the aisle, Diane’s defense attorney looked like he was about to pass out, while Diane herself stared at the prosecutor with undisguised panic. The name Vance carried weight—not the corrupt local network, but the state-level investigative branch that targeted high-level corporate predators.

“Proceed, Mr. Vance,” Judge Henderson commanded.

“Your Honor, the defense has attempted to frame this case as a simple domestic dispute gone tragic—an isolated incident involving a stressed business owner and a missing spouse,” Vance began, his deep, resonant voice filling the courtroom effortlessly. “However, our forensic investigation reveals a vastly different reality. The defendant, Diane Vance-Sterling, did not merely lock Lucy Sterling in a walk-in freezer to eliminate a marital obstacle. She did so to complete a calculated, multi-year corporate takeover of the entire Sterling estate.”

He pulled a crisp, yellowed document from his briefcase and held it up for the court to see.

“We have recovered the true, unrecorded supplemental last will and testament of the late Arthur Sterling Sr.—signed forty years ago and legally held in escrow under seal,” Vance declared, his eyes sweeping across the courtroom before locking directly onto Diane. “According to this document, the commercial real estate where The Gilded Hearth now operates, along with the adjacent ninety acres of mineral-rich land along Miller’s Ridge, was never legally Diane’s to leverage, mortgage, or sell.”

Diane lunged forward against the defense table, her handcuffs clanking loudly as she tried to shout across the room. “That’s a lie! That property was transferred to my family legally through the county commercial registry!”

“Quiet, defendant, or I will have you removed from the courtroom!” Judge Henderson barked, slamming his gavel down with a crack that silenced her instantly.

“The transfer was executed using fraudulent proxy signatures notarized by a disgraced county clerk who is currently serving a federal prison sentence for mortgage fraud,” Vance continued smoothly, placing the document onto the clerk’s desk. “Furthermore, seventy percent of all commercial equity and subsurface mineral rights associated with those properties belong exclusively to Lucy Sterling and her surviving legal heir, Jack Sterling.”

The courtroom erupted into a chaotic storm of gasps and whispers.

Mark sat frozen on the bench behind us, his mouth slightly open, staring at my mother as the full, earth-shattering realization of what had just been revealed finally crashed over him. For seven months, Diane had lied, manipulated, tortured, and stolen—not just to get rid of Lucy, but to steal an entire empire built on family land that belonged to us by right.

I looked down at my hands, remembering the heavy iron shackle of the padlock, the cold darkness of the freezer, and the terrified breathing of my mother echoing through the phone line.

Diane hadn't just tried to bury my mother. She had tried to bury our entire family history.

And she had failed.
