Chapter 8 - The Digital Trap

Richard scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "Spare me the dramatic stalling, Mark. My legal team spent six months plugging every single loophole in your corporate charter. There are no surprises left."
"Are you sure about that?" I asked quietly. I slowly pulled my left hand away from the folder, reached into my coat pocket, and pulled out my encrypted burner phone. The screen was lit up, displaying a flashing green data-transfer completion bar.
Richard’s eyes flicked down to the phone, a sudden, subtle flicker of unease crossing his face. "What is that?"
"That," I said, stepping back from the table and dropping the pen onto the wooden planks of the pier, "is a live, automated data broadcast currently transmitting every single encrypted financial record, offshore shell-company registry, and wire-transfer confirmation belonging to Apex Capital straight to the federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York."
The color drained from Richard’s face so fast he suddenly looked like a corpse under the amber streetlamp. "You're bluffing. You don't have access to—"
"I didn't," I interrupted, my voice sharp as a razor. "Not until your tech team tried to override my estate's power grid this afternoon. When they bounced their EMP signal through our firewall, they left an open backdoor routing directly back to your primary proxy server in the Caymans. Julian didn't just trace your offshore accounts, Richard. He mirrored your entire master ledger."
Richard lunged forward, his hand diving instinctively toward the inside of his trench coat where a heavy pistol was holstered. "Give me that phone!"
Before his fingers could even wrap around the grip of the weapon, a deafening roar shattered the stillness of the night.
From the shadows behind the rusted shipping containers, two heavy-duty black SUVs came screaming around the corner with their high-beams blazing, tires screeching against the gravel as they slammed to a halt, cutting off the helicopter's escape route. At the same time, the side doors of the aircraft flew open from the inside, and a sharp, metallic click echoed across the deck.
It wasn't Richard's operative holding a weapon anymore.
A heavily armed tactical officer in full federal gear stepped out of the helicopter cabin, holding a customized submachine gun pointed directly at Richard's chest, while cradling a small, trembling child in his other arm.
"Federal agents! Don't move!" shouted a voice from the lead SUV as half a dozen armed men poured out into the perimeter, securing the area in a matter of seconds.
Emily scrambled out of the tactical officer's arms, her white dress slightly smudged with dust, her big blue eyes wide with adrenaline.
"Daddy!" she cried out, breaking away from the federal agent and sprinting across the wooden planks straight toward me.

I dropped to my knees, opening my arms just in time as she threw herself against my chest, wrapping her small arms around my neck so tightly I thought I might suffocate. I buried my face in her hair, tears of pure relief finally breaking through my composure.
"I've got you, sweetheart," I choked out, holding her as tightly as humanly possible. "I've got you. You're safe."
