Chapter 6 - The Federal Sweep

The boots of the federal marshals thundered up the grand mahogany staircase, their heavy tactical gear clanking against the polished banister. Within seconds, the doorway of Richard Vance’s private study was flooded with armed agents, their tactical flashlights cutting beams of harsh white light across the shattered remnants of his corporate empire.
"Clear!" shouted the lead agent, sweeping his carbine toward the corners of the room before lowering the muzzle as he saw me standing over the desk. He blinked, recognizing my face immediately. "General Blackwell... wait, Mr. Blackwell. Sorry, sir. We secured the perimeter just as your legal counsel requested."
I released my grip on Richard’s wrist, letting him slump back into his leather executive chair like a deflated balloon. He cradled his bruised arm against his chest, gasping for air, his eyes darting frantically toward the federal agents as realization set in. There was no escape hatch. No offshore bailout. No clever legal loophole to save him now.
"Secure the hardware," I instructed the lead marshal, pointing a finger at the dead, blackened screens of the custom desktop rig. "The primary routing drive is disconnected, but the mirrored flash-cache on the motherboard should still contain the local buffer logs for the last seventy-two hours. Do not let anyone touch the internal components."
"Understood, sir," the agent nodded, signaling two specialists to move in with anti-static evidence bags and portable data-extraction kits.
Marcus Sterling pushed his way past the agents into the study, looking impeccably sharp despite the late hour, wearing a dark trench coat over his tailored suit. He glanced at Richard, then at the smoking power socket on the wall, before offering me a tight, approving nod.
"Cut it close, Julian," Marcus murmured, stepping up beside me. "The magistrate signed the emergency asset-seizure warrants five minutes ago. Every corporate account, shell company, and subsidiary tied to the Vance-Link registry is currently frozen under federal receivership."
Richard raised his head, his face pale and twisted with sudden, ugly desperation. He glared up at Marcus, then spat poison at me. "You think you've destroyed me, Julian? You think freezing my accounts stops the machinery? I wasn't acting alone! The board members—half your senior vice presidents—they approved the administrative structuring packages. If I go down for systemic labor skimming, I'm taking your entire executive board right down into the mud with me!"
"Let them fall," I replied coldly, leaning down so my face was inches from his. "If my company was built on the backs of exploited mothers and stolen wages, then it deserves to burn to the ground so we can build something honest from the ashes."
Marcus stepped forward, snapping a pair of standard-issue steel cuffs onto Richard’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click. "Richard Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and systematic labor racketeering. You have the right to remain silent..."
May you like
As the marshals hauled Richard to his feet and dragged him out of the study, the digital silence of the room felt heavier than ever. But for the first time in two years, the crushing weight in my chest had shifted. The fog of passive grief was finally burning away, replaced by a cold, sharp purpose.
