Chapter 9 - The Perimeter Trap

My fingers brushed against the cold metal bars of the service gate just as a heavy, crushing weight slammed into my back from behind.

With a startled shriek, I was hurled forward, crashing hard onto the cold asphalt of the driveway. The impact knocked the wind entirely out of my lungs, a sharp agony exploding across my shoulder blades as Marcus landed squarely on top of me, pinning my chest to the ground with his full body weight.

"Got you," he hissed, his breath hot and ragged against the back of my neck.

"Get off me!" I screamed, thrashing wildly beneath him, kicking my legs and clawing frantically at the asphalt. "Let me go!"

Marcus pinned my wrists down above my head with one massive hand, his grip like a hydraulic press, while his free hand groped frantically through the pockets of my jacket.

"Give me the drive, Elena," he snarled, his composure completely gone, replaced by a desperate, frantic urgency. "Hand it over right now, or I swear to God you won't live to see the end of this night."

"No!" I shrieked, twisting my body with every ounce of strength I had left, fighting like an animal cornered in a cage. "Everyone knows I'm here! The police are already looking for me!"

"Stop lying!" Marcus roared, sliding his hand deep into my coat pocket and ripping the fabric as he yanked the small black USB flash drive out into the open air.

My heart plummeted into my stomach. He had it. The only proof, the only leverage I had to expose what happened to Chloe, was sitting right there in his palm.

"You fool," Marcus panted, standing up slowly while keeping one heavy foot planted firmly on my lower back to prevent me from rising. He held the small plastic drive up to the amber glow of the security light, a triumphant, wicked smirk spreading across his face. "You really thought a simple flash drive could bring down my family? You thought you could play detective and walk away?"

"You're a monster," I choked out, tears of absolute rage and helplessness streaming down my face, mixing with the dust and gravel clinging to my cheeks. "You killed Chloe, and you're going to pay for it."

Marcus chuckled, a dark, chilling sound that echoed against the iron gates. He raised his arm, preparing to pocket the drive, when a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shadows just beyond the perimeter brick pillars.

Marcus froze. His head snapped toward the sound.

From behind the brick pillar stepped a figure cloaked in the deep twilight shadows, holding a heavy iron garden spade like a baseball bat.

"Drop it, Marcus," a voice rang out—shaking, breathless, but filled with an unmistakable, venomous fury.

It wasn't a stranger. It was Victoria.

Her hair was wild, her designer blouse torn at the shoulder, and her eyes burned with an unhinged, terrifying fire that dwarfed anything I had seen earlier that afternoon. She wasn't playing a theatrical role anymore; this was raw, unadulterated madness.

Marcus slowly turned around, his expression shifting from triumphant arrogance into sudden, sharp confusion as he stared down his wife. "Victoria? What the hell are you doing out here? Put that down before you hurt yourself."

"You think I didn't know?" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she took a slow, menacing step toward him, dragging the iron spade across the asphalt with a grating screech. "You think I didn't know what you did to Chloe? You think I didn't know you planned to frame me for that murder, too?!"

Marcus's face drained of color, the mask of absolute control finally shattering completely. "Victoria, you're not well. Put the spade down and let's go back inside—"

"Stay back!" she screamed, swinging the heavy iron tool upward with surprising speed.

Before Marcus could react, Victoria swung the spade in a vicious, sweeping arc straight toward his head.
