Chapter 6 - The Midnight Warrant

The wind howled against the heavy double-paned windows of the Sterling manor, driving thick sheets of snow across the dark lawns below. Inside the warm, wood-paneled study, the grandfather clock ticked with a relentless, heavy rhythm that matched the spike of adrenaline still pumping through my veins.
My father was standing by the mahogany desk, holding Dr. Vance’s freshly signed medical report in one hand and Evelyn’s incriminating notebook in the other, when the sharp, piercing wail of the estate’s outer perimeter alarm cut through the quiet house.
The security monitor on the desk flared from a soft amber standby glow to a harsh, flashing crimson.
"Dad," I breathed, clutching the edges of the thick wool blanket draped over my shoulders as I rose from the armchair. "What is that?"
My father didn't answer. He tapped the master screen with a steady finger, switching the display from the front gate camera to the main entrance driveway.
Parked directly beneath the grand porch chandelier were two sleek, unmarked state police cruisers, their red and blue emergency strobes painting the falling snow in frantic flashes of color. Flanking the cruisers were three heavy-duty black SUVs, their doors swinging open as half a dozen armed county deputies and two plainclothes detectives stepped out into the blizzard.
"They didn't waste any time," my father muttered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. He didn't look panicked; he looked like a general watching the enemy breach the outer trench.
Before my father could reach the intercom to ask what the local authorities wanted at midnight, the heavy oak front door shuddered under a series of loud, authoritative knocks.
"Open up! County Sheriff's Department! We have a court-ordered execution of a welfare and emergency custody writ!" a booming voice echoed through the intercom speakers from the front porch.
"Stay right here, Clara," my father commanded, tossing the medical report onto the desk and walking swiftly toward the study door. "Do not open this door for anyone, understand?"
"Dad, wait—those aren't normal deputies," I protested, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Julian’s family has judges in their pocket. They're going to try to take me by force!"
"They can try," my father said over his shoulder, slipping out into the hallway and pulling the heavy wooden door half-shut behind him.
I paced the length of the study, every instinct screaming at me to run, but there was nowhere to go. Through the narrow gap in the study door, I could hear the muffled, angry shouting echoing up from the grand foyer below. My father’s voice was deep, commanding, and absolute, clashing sharply against a high-pitched, abrasive voice that sounded suspiciously like a county magistrate or a high-priced municipal lawyer acting under emergency orders.
"You have no jurisdiction to execute a custody writ on private residential property without a circuit court judge's signature, and I happen to know Judge Holloway is out of state!" my father roared down the staircase.
"Mr. Sterling, obstruct an officer of the court and we will arrest you for harboring a fugitive and interfering with a lawful domestic injunction!" the unfamiliar voice barked back.
A sharp metallic clatter echoed from the foyer—the sound of the heavy front door being forced open against the security chain.
May you like
My breath caught in my throat. I backed away into the shadows of the study, my hands flying protectively over my swollen belly, as heavy footsteps began to thunder up the grand mahogany staircase.
