Chapter 3 - Three Scared Boys

In the secluded, gated enclave of Chestnut Hill, the Whitmore family mansion stood like a monument to old-money arrogance. Inside the sprawling billiards room, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of aged bourbon, imported cigars, and rising panic.

Ethan Cole paced back and forth across the Persian rug, his expensive loafers clicking against the hardwood floor with frantic repetition. His face was pale, his hands trembling as he gripped his smartphone. Brandon Hale sat slumped in a leather armchair, staring blankly at the wall, while Tyler Whitmore poured himself a fourth glass of neat whiskey, his hands shaking so violently that the amber liquid sloshed over the rim of the crystal glass.

"Have you seen the news?" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. "My dad's office is in total meltdown! The EPA just slapped a complete stop-work order on our downtown development project. Millions of dollars are bleeding out by the hour!"

"That's nothing," Brandon muttered, his voice hollow and dead. "My mother... my mother was just hauled out of the Fairmont hotel by a swarm of reporters. The federal prosecutor's office announced a full grand jury investigation into her campaign finances. Her career is completely over. She's finished."

Tyler slammed his glass down onto the mahogany table, shattering it into a dozen glittering pieces. "Who is doing this?" he screamed, his face flushing a furious, desperate red. "We covered our tracks! The security guard took the bribe! The cameras were wiped! Who the hell has enough power to dismantle three major families in less than twelve hours?"

Before anyone could answer, the room’s smart-home automation system flickered. The overhead recessed lights buzzed and dipped to a dim, amber glow. The smart thermostat clicked off, plunging the room into an eerie, stifling silence.

Then, every television screen mounted on the wood-paneled walls simultaneously snapped on.

There was no news anchor. There was no audio feed. The screens displayed a live, high-definition camera feed from inside Mercy General Hospital—specifically, room 412.

The three boys froze. Their blood ran cold.

On the screen, Lily Walker lay quietly beneath the hospital lights, her jaw still wired shut, bruises slowly fading into sickly yellows and greens. Sitting in the chair beside her was an older man with graying temples and a dark overcoat. He didn't look at the camera. He simply sat in silence, holding his daughter's hand with terrifying stillness.

"What... what is that?" Ethan whispered, backing away from the screen as if it were a venomous snake.

Suddenly, the audio channels across the room’s surround-sound speakers clicked active. A low, measured breath echoed through the grand room, followed by a voice that carried the weight of an executioner.

"You boys made a mistake," Daniel Walker’s voice filled the room, cold, calm, and utterly devoid of mercy.

Tyler reached for his phone, panic overriding his logic. "I'm calling my father's security team. I'm calling the police—"

"Your security team is currently tied up," Daniel interrupted smoothly over the speakers, his voice seeming to emanate from the walls themselves. "And the police are rather busy cataloging your parents' corruption files. You thought you could break a nineteen-year-old girl and buy your silence with privilege."

Brandon dropped to his knees, his composure completely shattered. "Please," he sobbed, burying his face in his hands. "Please, just leave us alone. We'll pay for her medical bills. We'll confess. Just don't..."

"Confession is for courts," Daniel said quietly. "What is coming for you isn't a courtroom."

May you like

The screens flickered once, twice, and then went completely black. The overhead lights surged back to full brightness, leaving the three boys gasping for air in the sudden glare, their faces slick with cold sweat, realizing with absolute, paralyzing terror that they were entirely unprotected.
