Chapter 8 - The Terminal Truth

Ten minutes later, the emergency backup generators finally sputtered to life, flooding the mansion with harsh, clinical white light. The Houston police hadn’t been called—in my world, calling the local authorities into a targeted corporate strike was like inviting sharks to a bloodbath. Instead, Marcus and a dozen of our most trusted loyalists had secured the perimeter, sweeping the grounds and neutralizing the remaining infiltrators.
In the study, the laptop screen was still flashing its high-priority system override alert.
I stood over the mahogany desk, a fresh cup of black coffee in my hand, while Marcus stood beside me tapping away at the keyboard, reversing the forced proxy transfer.
"They were slick, Boss," Marcus said, his brow furrowed as he watched lines of encrypted code scrolling across the screen. "They used a multi-layered proxy server routed through the Cayman Islands, tied directly to an offshore trust controlled by Patricia Hale’s late husband. If we had waited another twelve hours, the foundation’s entire portfolio—including the real estate holdings and the children's primary trust funds—would have been legally unrecoverable."
"But you caught it," I said flatly.
"Thanks to the system audit you ordered before the grid went down," Marcus nodded. "We managed to freeze the transfer protocol at ninety-eight percent completion. The remaining two percent requires a biometric master signature. Yours."
I stared at the screen. The cursor blinked steadily, waiting for my authorization to permanently lock out the fraudulent corporate board and restore full, unassailable control of the Madeline Whitaker Memorial Foundation to my name alone.
"Do it," I commanded.
Marcus hit the enter key. A deep, resonant chime rang out from the internal speakers, followed by a crisp green banner across the display: SYSTEM RESTORED. SOLE ADMINISTRATOR: ETHAN WHITAKER.
"What about Patricia?" Marcus asked, pocketing his flash drive. "We tracked her cell signal. She’s currently sitting at a private aviation terminal at Hobby Airport, waiting for a Gulfstream chartered to Mexico."
I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling the heat burn down my throat. The cold, calculating weight of my empire settled back onto my shoulders, but this time, the foundation beneath it felt solid.
"Don't touch her at the airport," I said softly, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of my mouth. "Let her board the plane. Let her think she won. And then, the moment that aircraft crosses international airspace, have our federal contacts flag the flight manifest for undeclared corporate securities fraud and illegal asset flight."
Marcus grinned—a cold, shark-like expression. "Consider it done, Boss. She’ll land in a federal holding cell instead of a resort."
"Good," I turned away from the desk. "And Marcus?"
"Yeah, Boss?"
"Double the security detail around the estate permanently. And make sure Clara Bennett’s contract is rewritten immediately."
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Rewritten? Promotion to head administrator?"
May you like
"No," I replied, looking toward the door where soft footsteps could be heard approaching down the hallway. "Partner. Because in this house, she’s the only one who actually knows how to survive."
