Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

Three weeks later, the moving truck rolled away from the curb of a charming, single-story brick home nestled beneath the sprawling oak trees of the Olmos Park neighborhood in San Antonio.

The air smelled of fresh-cut grass, blooming jasmine, and the promise of a brand-new beginning.

Daniel stood on the front porch, unboxing the last of the kitchenware, while the warm afternoon breeze rustled through the wind chimes hanging from the front porch beam. Inside, the house was filled with the sound of soft acoustic music playing from the stereo and the gentle, unhurried footsteps of a woman who no longer had to hide behind a blue quilt.

Rachel walked out onto the front porch, wearing a comfortable sundress, her hand resting gently on her very pregnant belly. She stepped up beside Daniel, leaning her shoulder against his arm as they looked out over the quiet, sunlit street.

"It's quiet here," Rachel whispered, a gentle smile touching her lips. "Real quiet."

"Just quiet enough," Daniel replied, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close. "No extra keys. No uninvited guests. Just us."

As if on cue, a sharp kick from inside her belly made Rachel gasp playfully, her eyes lighting up with amusement. "I think someone else likes the new backyard."

Daniel laughed, dropping down on one knee to press his ear gently against her stomach.

"Hey, little guy," Daniel murmured softly against her dress. "Welcome home. Your mom and dad are right here, and nobody is ever going to hurt you."

From inside the house, the afternoon sunlight streamed through the clean white windows, illuminating a nursery painted in soft shades of pale blue and warm cream, completely empty of shadows, ready for a life that was finally, truly theirs.
