Chapter 5 - The Mother’s Gambit

The heavy steel door of Interview Room Alpha opened again before Beckett could muster a single coherent defense. Two military police officers escorted a second individual into the room, guiding her with firm, professional efficiency toward the vacant chair beside her son.

Mary Sterling looked remarkably different from the haughty, condescending woman who had sneered at me in the emergency room just hours earlier. Her designer silk blouse was slightly wrinkled, her gray-streaked hair was loose around her temples, and her manicured fingers clutched a leather handbag as if it were a life raft in the middle of a freezing ocean.

When she saw me standing across the metal table in my crisp Army uniform, her eyes widened in profound shock. For a fleeting second, the old arrogance flickered behind her gaze, but it was instantly crushed by the overwhelming reality of the secure military environment surrounding her.

“Mary,” I said, my voice level and devoid of emotion. “Welcome to Fort Myer.”

Mary dropped heavily into the metal chair beside Beckett, her breath hitching as she looked from me to the small black recorder resting on the center of the table. She instinctively reached out a trembling hand to touch Beckett’s arm, her maternal protective instinct clashing with the sudden, terrifying realization that her golden boy’s carefully crafted web of deceit had completely collapsed.

“This is an absolute abuse of power,” Mary snapped, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to project authority. “You cannot detain us like common criminals! We demand to speak to a civilian magistrate immediately! My son is a respectable business consultant, and I am a taxpayer in this county!”

“Your taxpayer status doesn't grant you immunity under Title 18 of the United States Code, Mrs. Sterling,” Marcus’s voice echoed smoothly through the room as he stepped in through the open doorway, carrying a secondary briefing folder. He walked over to the table and laid a printed transcript down right beside the recorder.

Mary glanced down at the paper. The top header was stamped in bold red letters: CLASSIFIED / FORENSIC AUDIO TRANSCRIPT - CASE FILE 889-CYBER-SEC. Below it were exact, timestamped lines of dialogue from Friday night’s dinner conversation in our suburban kitchen.

“Once she is declared unstable, she cannot stop you.”

“The Army angle worries me.”

“She types reports. Stop acting like she is some general.”

Mary’s face turned the color of ash. She traced the lines with her eyes, her lips moving silently as she read her own spoken words back to herself in black and white.

“That... that was a private conversation in our own home!” Mary gasped, her head snapping up to glare at me with venomous hatred. “You spied on us! You recorded us in secret! That’s illegal entrapment!”

“It’s not entrapment when you invite the wolf into your own living room,” I replied calmly, leaning slightly forward with my hands resting on the edge of the table. “For six years, you and Beckett treated me like an outsider in my own home. You assumed that because I wore civilian clothes on the weekends and kept my professional duties classified, I was weak, submissive, and completely unprotected.”

Beckett finally found his voice, though it came out as a desperate, pathetic whine. “Evelyn, please... we were just under pressure. The market was bad, the inheritance trust had those complex restrictions... we just wanted to secure our financial future! We didn't mean for it to go this far!”

“You didn't mean to choke me unconscious outside an emergency room and frame me for domestic assault?” I asked, my voice cutting through his excuses like a razor. “You didn't mean to forge psychiatric evaluations and medical claims to strip away my legal autonomy?”

Mary clutched her handbag tighter, her expression hardening once again into bitter defiance. “You brought this on yourself, Evelyn! You were always so secretive, hiding behind your little Pentagon passwords and your locked briefcases. If you had just signed the financial authorization papers like a dutiful wife, none of this would have happened!”

“A dutiful wife,” I repeated, the irony hanging heavy in the sterile air of the interrogation room.

I straightened my posture, letting the full weight of my rank and experience settle over the two of them.

“Mary, for twenty years, I have commanded soldiers, coordinated multi-agency intelligence operations, and defended national security assets against hostile foreign actors who were infinitely more dangerous, sophisticated, and ruthless than your son could ever hope to be,” I said, my voice ringing with absolute clarity. “You thought my silence was submission. You thought my discretion was ignorance. You made the fatal mistake of treating a senior United States Army officer like a domestic target.”

Marcus stepped forward, placing a formal legal document down on the table beside the transcript.

“As of zero four hundred hours, federal warrants have been executed for the seizure of all digital assets, corporate accounts, and residential properties associated with Beckett and Mary Sterling under suspicion of federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and physical assault of a protected defense official,” Marcus announced crisply. “You will both be transferred to federal holding facilities pending arraignment in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia tomorrow morning.”

May you like

Mary let out a soft, defeated gasp, slumping back into her chair as the full weight of their impending ruin crashed down upon her. Beckett stared blankly at the metal table, his hands shaking uncontrollably as the handcuffs were unclipped from Marcus’s belt.
