Chapter 8 - The Subterranean Vault

The elevator descended deep into the limestone bedrock beneath the Oyster Bay estate, the air growing noticeably cooler and tasting of damp earth and polished concrete. When the car finally came to a smooth halt, the doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, high-tech command center hidden beneath the mansion.

Rows of glowing monitors lined the walls, displaying live video feeds from dozens of hidden cameras scattered across the property. Armed guards in tactical gear rushed back and forth between weapon lockers and communication consoles, their movements disciplined and precise.

Dominic gently set me down on a leather medical cot near the center of the room, his dark eyes scanning my face for any sign of distress.

"Are you bleeding?" he demanded, his hands hovering over my waist.

"I'm fine," I gasped, pressing a hand against my bandaged ribs. "Just... give me a second to breathe."

Enzo stepped up to the primary tactical console, his fingers flying across the keyboard to isolate the audio feeds from the upper floors. "They're moving through the library now. Thermal imaging shows six operatives clearing the ground floor. They found the empty lockbox on the coffee table."

"Let them look," Dominic said coldly, turning away from me to stand before the central tactical map. He picked a heavy, matte-black tactical vest off a nearby rack and strapped it over his broad chest, checking the spare magazines on his belt with practiced efficiency. "They think they've cornered us. But they walked right into a kill box."

I watched him prepare for war, the cold realization washing over me once again. This was his world—a world of concrete bunkers, hidden armories, blood feuds, and lethal retaliation. And by putting a gold ring on my finger while I lay unconscious on a hospital bed, he had dragged me right down into the center of it.

"You planned this," I said quietly, my voice cutting through the hum of the computer servers.

Dominic paused, a spare magazine halfway into his vest pouch. He looked back over his shoulder, his dark gaze locking onto mine.

"I planned for Costa to make a move," Dominic admitted without a shred of hesitation. "As long as he was hiding behind his shell corporations and political bribes, we couldn't touch him legally or underworld-wise. But when he sent his hit squad to St. Catherine’s Hospital, and now when he breached my home, he declared open war. Tonight, Victor Costa signs his own death warrant."

"And what happens to me?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts to sound brave. "Once your war is over? Once Costa is dead? Am I just another trophy wife locked away in a limestone fortress on the coast?"

Dominic walked slowly back across the room until he was standing right beside my cot. He leaned down, placing one large hand on the metal frame inches from my hip, trapping me in his intense, suffocating gaze.

"You are my wife, Clara Rossi," he said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register that vibrated straight through my chest. "In my world, that is not a cage. It is a crown. But if you want out—if you want to walk away the moment the smoke clears—the flash drives and a new identity are yours. You can catch a flight to anywhere in the world."

He paused, his eyes searching my face as if looking for the answer before I could even speak it.

"Abundant funds, complete protection, and no strings attached," Dominic added softly. "Would you take it?"

Before I could answer, a loud, thunderous explosion echoed from the ceiling above us, followed by the screech of reinforced steel yielding to a heavy thermal cutting torch.

Enzo slammed his hand onto a red master override switch on the console. "Boss! They found the maintenance shaft! They're cutting through the ceiling grid right above the main vault!"

Dominic straightened up instantly, the softness vanishing from his eyes, replaced once again by the terrifying, lethal focus of a crime lord defending his domain. He drew his Sig Sauer, racked the slide with a crisp clack, and turned toward the reinforced bulkhead door at the back of the bunker.

"Stay behind the concrete barrier," Dominic ordered me, his voice absolute. "If anyone comes through that door who isn't me or Enzo... you pull the trigger of the Glock resting on that table."

May you like

With that, he turned and marched into the shadows of the subterranean armour, leaving me alone in the flickering amber light with a loaded gun and a war I never asked to fight.
