Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Promise

Three weeks had passed since we left the city behind.

The crisp autumn air had settled into a sharp, refreshing chill, and the leaves outside our coastal cottage had turned brilliant shades of gold and crimson. The lingering trauma of Maya’s surgery and the nightmare of our past life had begun to fade, replaced by the comforting, predictable rhythms of our new routine.

Every morning, we sat together on the wide wraparound porch, drinking warm apple cider wrapped in thick wool blankets while watching the seagulls wheel across the morning sky. Maya’s surgical staples had been successfully removed by our new pediatrician in town, leaving behind a clean, fading line hidden neatly beneath her dark hair. Her strength had returned full force; she could now run across the backyard grass without losing her balance, chasing butterflies and exploring the winding dirt trails that led down to the rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean.

Life had finally found its true balance.

On a bright Saturday afternoon, we were sitting on the porch steps. Maya was busy sketching a picture of the ocean in her new art pad, her tongue slightly caught between her teeth in deep concentration.

I watched her, a quiet sense of profound gratitude settling deep into my bones. I had spent my entire life building an empire, managing global portfolios, and outmaneuvering powerful men in boardrooms across the world. I had believed that power was measured in capital, influence, and unyielding control.

I had been wrong.

True power wasn't about what you could control out in the world; it was about who you protected when the world tried to break them.

Maya looked up from her drawing pad, noticing me staring at her. She tilted her head, a playful smile playing on her lips.

"What are you thinking about, Daddy?" she asked, holding up her sketch pad to show me a crayon drawing of a tall castle by the ocean with two stick figures standing on the porch—one large, one small, holding hands.

I reached out, taking the drawing from her hands and looking at the bright, hopeful colors.

"I was just thinking," I said softly, pulling her close into my side so her head rested against my shoulder, "that this is the best place in the entire world."

May you like

Maya nodded happily, snuggling closer into the warmth of my jacket. "And we're never, ever going back, right?"

"Never," I promised, my voice carrying out across the whispering oak trees and mixing with the endless, rhythmic crashing of the ocean waves against the shore. "It's just you and me. Forever."
