Chapter 8 - The Breach at Dawn

The black sedan slid to a silent stop against the curb twenty feet from Marin’s apartment building. Abel Ferraro cut the engine before the dashboard lights had even finished fading. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a heavy steel-framed pistol, and checked the chamber with a crisp, mechanical click.

In the passenger seat, Rafael sat staring out the window at the darkened brick facade of the complex. The streetlights flickered in the damp wind, casting long, fractured shadows across the pavement.

"The back alley is clear," Abel muttered, keeping his eyes on the rearview mirror. "If Celeste's people moved on her, they're already inside."

Rafael opened his door and stepped out into the cold night air. The rain was beginning to turn into a fine, stinging sleet that clung to the shoulders of his coat. He didn't hesitate. He walked toward the side entrance of the building with the purposeful stride of a man stepping onto a battlefield he had already mapped out in his mind.

Inside the stairwell, the air smelled of stale grease, damp carpet, and bleach. They climbed two flights of stairs in total silence, their footsteps absorbed by the worn red runner.

When they reached the second-floor landing, the sound reached them—a muffled scuffle, the splintering of wood, and a sharp, terrified cry that could only belong to one person.

Rafael didn't knock. He raised his foot and slammed it squarely against the center of Apartment 2B’s wooden door.

The deadbolt ripped straight out of the rotting doorframe with a thunderous crash, the door swinging wide open and slamming against the interior drywall.

Inside the cramped kitchen, a thick-set man in a dark leather jacket had Marin pinned against the counter, one hand clamped tightly over her mouth while his other hand clawed blindly inside her canvas tote bag. Marin was fighting back with every ounce of strength she had left, swinging her elbows and kicking her legs, her face flushed and tear-streaked.

The intruder whipped his head around at the sound of the exploding door, his eyes widening in horror as he saw Rafael standing in the threshold with Abel right behind him.

"Boss—wait, I didn't know—" the man stammered, letting go of Marin and reaching frantically for a pistol tucked into his waistband.

He never cleared leather.

Abel moved with terrifying speed, closing the distance across the small kitchen in two strides. He grabbed the man by the throat, lifted him two inches off the floor with one hand, and slammed him headfirst into the refrigerator door with a sickening thud. The man went limp instantly, sliding down the white enamel to crumpled heap on the linoleum.

Marin staggered backward, gasping for air, clutching her canvas bag to her chest like a shield. Her eyes were wild, darting from Abel to Rafael.

Rafael stepped slowly into the kitchen. He looked down at the unconscious man at his feet, then shifted his gaze up to Marin. He noticed the red marks on her wrists, the torn fabric of her blouse, and the trembling, unyielding defiance in her eyes.

"Are you hurt?" Rafael asked, his voice low and steady.

Marin swallowed hard, her voice shaking violently. "Who... who are you?"

"I’m the man who owns the building where you work," Rafael said, stepping closer and extending a hand downward. "And I’m the man who is going to make sure nobody ever touches you again."

Marin looked at his outstretched hand, then slowly lowered her bag, revealing the grease-stained edge of Bernadette’s notebook sticking out of the top.

"You're... you're Santoro," she whispered.

May you like

"Yes," Rafael said. "And I need to see what's in that bag."
