Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Patriarchs

The grey light of dawn creeping through the high arched windows of the downtown federal holding facility felt entirely devoid of warmth. Outside, a light autumn drizzle was slicking the asphalt, washing away the remnants of a city that had spent the last twenty-four hours in absolute institutional shock.
I stood in the second-floor observation gallery, looking down through the thick, reinforced glass pane into the central processing bullpen below.
Richard Caldwell, Senator Eleanor Sterling, Arthur Kensington, and Thomas Holbrook—the untouchable titans who had ruled this city's boardrooms, political committees, and judicial benches—sat handcuffed to metal chairs around a scuffed laminate table. Their bespoke Italian suits were rumpled, their hair disheveled, and their expressions a masterpiece of utter, paralyzing disbelief. They hadn't slept. They had spent the entire night trying to call lawyers, judges, and governors who suddenly no longer recognized their names.
Major Bishop stepped up beside me, handing me a fresh container of black coffee and a secure digital tablet.
"The federal prosecutors just finished their initial preliminary review of the encrypted ledgers Mitchell decrypted from Caldwell Private Bank," Bishop said, his voice low and steady. "Every shell corporation, every bribed municipal judge, every illegal zoning kickback—it’s all there in black and white. The Department of Justice is filing thirty-four counts of grand corruption, securities fraud, and conspiracy against the four patriarchs."
I took a slow sip of the coffee, my eyes never leaving Richard Caldwell, who was frantically whispering to a public defender who looked completely out of his depth.
"What about the political shields?" I asked. "Senator Sterling?"
"Strip-searched and placed on indefinite suspension by the Ethics Committee," Bishop replied, a cold grin touching the corner of his mouth. "The media got hold of the video footage from the high-society gala where her son’s involvement in the alleyway assault was broadcast on every screen in the room. Her political career isn't just over; she's facing federal indictments for obstruction of justice regarding the wiped hospital security cameras."
"Good," I said quietly. "They thought they could protect their children by burying the truth in bureaucratic red tape. They forgot that when you build an empire on lies, it only takes one structural fracture to bring the whole thing down."
My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the screen. It was a secure text message from the private nurse I had stationed at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.
> “Patient Nora Vance woke up thirty minutes ago. Vital signs are completely stable. She asked for you, Commander.”
Every muscle in my body relaxed instantly. The cold, calculating edge of the Phantom Commander receded, leaving behind the only identity that truly mattered to me: Nora’s father.
"Bishop, I'm heading back to the hospital," I said, handing the tablet back to him. "Wrap up the remaining data transfers and make sure all copies of the evidence are securely transmitted to the federal task force handling the criminal indictments."

"Consider it done, Boss," Bishop nodded. "Go take care of your daughter. We'll handle the clean-up here."
