Chapter 5 - The Midnight Confrontation

By ten o'clock that night, the apartment was finally quiet.
I had tucked Leo and Maya into their beds, listening to their soft, even breathing until the tension in my shoulders began to ease. I walked into the kitchen, poured myself a glass of water, and stared out into the dark courtyard below.
Evelyn’s visit had shaken me more than I cared to admit. She was right about one thing: Luca had an army of high-priced attorneys at his disposal, and if he chose to wage a legal war against me, the battle would be brutal, public, and exhausting.
A soft crunch of gravel echoed from the courtyard below my window.
I stepped closer to the glass, parting the sheer curtains slightly.
parked illegally across from my building.
The driver's side door opened, and Luca stepped out. He didn't look like a billionaire executive tonight. He looked worn, tired, and desperate. He stood on the sidewalk, staring up at my second-floor window through the dark, unmoving.
He didn't knock. He didn't call. He just stood there in the cold Chicago night, waiting.
I let out a long, shuddering breath, set my glass down on the counter, unlocked the front door, and walked quietly down the stairwell to the building entrance.
I pushed the heavy glass door open and stepped out onto the sidewalk.
Luca snapped his head toward me instantly. He closed the distance between us in three long strides, stopping just a few feet away, his chest heaving as if he had been running.
"Nia," he breathed, his voice raw. "I saw the light on. I didn't want to wake the kids..."
"Why are you here, Luca?" I asked, my voice cutting through the chilly night air like a knife. "Did Evelyn send you? Or did your lawyers give you a new strategy on how to destroy my life?"
"Evelyn didn't send me," Luca said fiercely, taking another step closer. "And I fired my legal team an hour ago."
I stopped, staring at him in disbelief. "You what?"
"I fired them," Luca repeated, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unwavering focus. "Because the moment Evelyn went behind my back to come see you—the moment she tried to threaten the mother of my children—I realized my entire life has been built on lies, manipulation, and people who only care about what I can give them."
He reached out, his hand hovering inches from my shoulder as if asking permission to touch me, then dropping back to his side.
"You were right about everything, Nia," Luca whispered, the confession tearing out of him like a physical wound. "You were right to leave. You were right to keep them from me. I was a arrogant, blind fool who let other people dictate my life. But I am begging you... give me one chance to prove that I am not the man I was four years ago."
I looked into his eyes—the same dark eyes my twins carried every single day—and felt the ancient armor around my heart crack for the very first time.

"It's too late for apologies, Luca," I whispered, my voice trembling in the dark. "You broke us."
"Then let me fix it," he said, stepping into the space between us, his voice dropping into a desperate plea. "Even if it takes the rest of my life."
