Chapter 10 - The Final Stand

The crayon drawing of the silver box sat on the kitchen table like a ticking bomb, its bright blue and yellow strokes contrasting sharply with the cold dread tightening in my chest. Mrs. Gable waved a cheery goodbye a few minutes later, completely oblivious to the ice water running through my veins, leaving Lily and me alone in the sunlit kitchen.
"Lily," I knelt beside her chair, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound calm. "Where did you see this man? Did he talk to you?"
Lily looked up from her paper, blinking her large blue eyes with innocent confusion. "In the yard, Mommy. When you were at the bakery. He was standing by the big maple tree. He had a shiny box, just like the one in the big house."
A spike of raw, unadulterated terror pierced my heart. They hadn't just found us—they were playing with us.
I didn't waste a second. I scooped Lily up into my arms, grabbed my encrypted phone from the entryway table, and bolted toward the back door, heading straight for the detached garden shed where Paul had stored an emergency communications relay linked directly to the Westchester estate.
As I kicked the wooden door of the shed open, the harsh chime of the secure satellite phone began blaring loudly from inside the pocket of my jacket.
I pulled it out with shaking fingers and pressed accept.
"Elena," Dominic Moretti’s voice came through the speaker instantly, sharp, hard, and stripped of all conversational warmth. "Get out of the house. Now."
"Mr. Moretti," I gasped, locking the shed door behind us and setting Lily down safely in the corner behind a stack of gardening supplies. "They're here. A silver sedan from New Jersey... Lily saw someone by the tree..."
"I know," Dominic interrupted, his tone chillingly lethal. "My scouts flagged three unmarked vehicles crossing the state line forty minutes ago. Marcone's remaining loyalists think they can leverage my silence by coming after the only people who matter."
"How did they find us?" I asked, tears of frustration stinging my eyes. "Paul said this place was secure!"
"It was secure from the inside, Elena," Dominic said, a dark edge creeping into his voice. "We missed a leak in the municipal real estate registry. Someone cross-referenced the deed transfer with your social security number three days ago. They thought they could use you to force my hand at the upcoming commission meeting."
Before I could answer, a loud, cracking thud echoed from the front of the property, followed by the sharp, unmistakable shattering of glass.
The front windows of our brownstone had just been smashed in.
"They're inside," I whispered, freezing in terror as muffled footsteps pounded against the hardwood floors of our living room.
"Listen to me very carefully, Elena," Dominic’s voice commanded through the phone, steady as a rock in the middle of a hurricane. "Look under the workbench in the garden shed. There is a floor panel secured with a brass latch."
I dropped to my knees, frantically shoving aside bags of potting soil and empty flower pots until my fingers brushed against a heavy iron ring set into the wooden floorboards. I yanked it upward. A hidden concrete staircase led down into a small, reinforced panic room equipped with emergency power, water, and a direct line to the estate's private tactical unit.
"Take Lily down there right now," Dominic instructed, his voice echoing slightly as if he were already moving, issuing commands to an army preparing for war. "Lock the steel hatch from the inside. Stay down there until I open it myself."
"And you?" I asked, my voice breaking as I picked Lily up and descended the first few steps into the dark concrete stairwell. "Mr. Moretti, what are you going to do?"
A cold, humorless chuckle came through the speaker.
May you like
"I told you once before, Elena," Dominic Moretti whispered softly, the sound of a shotgun slide racking home echoing clearly in the background before the line went dead. "Nobody touches the people who saved my family."
I pulled the heavy steel hatch shut above our heads, locking the deadbolt with a resounding metallic click just as the distant sound of gunfire erupted across the quiet Hudson Valley afternoon. As I pulled Lily tight against my chest in the dark safety of the bunker, listening to the muffled war being fought for our survival above, I knew one thing with absolute certainty: the world of monsters and syndicates had finally found us, but Dominic Moretti was going to burn the world to the ground before he ever let them touch us again.
