Chapter 8 - The Midnight Intruder

My blood ran instantly cold.
The door shouldn't be unlocked.
When I stepped back into the room ten minutes ago, I had thrown the heavy deadbolt on the inside frame—a standard hospital privacy latch designed to keep unauthorized visitors out. But right now, the brass knob was turning downward with a sickening, smooth rotation.
Clara froze, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she looked from me to the door.
I didn't think. I stood up so fast my plastic chair crashed backward onto the linoleum floor with a sharp clatter.
The door pushed inward.
The hallway light spilled across the dark hospital room, illuminating a tall, elegant figure standing in the doorway. She wore a dark trench coat, her honey-blonde hair slightly unraveled from its tight twist, casting long, menacing shadows across her face.
Vanessa.
She held a master hospital passkey dangling loosely from two manicured fingers, a cool, triumphant smile plastered across her ruby-red lips.
"Did you really think a simple privacy latch was going to keep me out of my own family's room, Mark?" she purred, her voice dripping with venomous sweetness as she stepped across the threshold.
"Get out," I snarled, my voice echoing off the walls with a fury that made Clara gasp. I rounded the bed in two massive strides, closing the distance between us before Vanessa could even react.
Instead of looking scared, Vanessa’s smile only widened. She reached into her coat pocket, her eyes gleaming with manic satisfaction. "You can't touch me, Mark. I have legal visitation rights until Thursday's magistrate review. And look what I brought for my poor, neglected stepdaughter."
She pulled a small, silver syringe out of her pocket, the fluorescent light glinting off the metal needle.
"Just a little something to help her sleep," Vanessa whispered, taking another step toward the bed where Lily was beginning to stir, whimpering softly at the sudden noise. "She gets so hysterical when she sees me. This will make things... so much quieter for everyone."
"Monster!" Clara screamed, lunging forward from her chair to grab Vanessa’s arm.
"Get away from her!" I roared, my hands closing around Vanessa’s coat collar and shoving her backward with every ounce of rage and adrenaline pulsing through my veins.
Vanessa stumbled hard, her back slamming against the heavy oak doorframe, but she didn't drop the syringe. Instead, her eyes locked onto mine with a cold, psychotic hatred, and she laughed—a sharp, shrill sound that cut straight through the quiet of the hospital ward.

"You're too late, Mark," she hissed, her fingers tightening around the plunger. "She's already mine."
