Chapter 4 - The Scramble for Survival

The revelation hit the gathered crowd like a physical shockwave. Whispers erupted instantly among the arriving guests, who had clustered near the edge of the driveway, shamelessly drinking in every delicious detail of the high-society scandal unfolding before them. Phones began appearing from designer pockets, cameras clicking silently as the myth of Steven Morrison’s self-made empire collapsed into dust in real time.

Eleanor recovered her voice first, though it shook with a toxic mixture of rage and sheer panic. "This is a malicious fabrication! A desperate stunt by a bitter, jealous woman who can't bear to see her son living a life of luxury she could never hope to understand! Victoria, do not stand there crying like a fool! Call Arthur immediately! Have his firm's legal team slap an emergency injunction on this woman before she causes any more damage!"

Victoria wiped her mascara-stained cheeks, her eyes blazing with absolute fury as she glared at her husband. "Steven! Is this true? Did your mother buy this house? Were you lying to me and my family the entire time we were dating? Were you living off her charity while pretending to be a financial titan?"

Steven looked up, his face pale and tear-streaked, his voice cracking miserably. "I... I tried to tell you, Victoria. Back when we met, I was broke. I was drowning. My mother saved me. She bought the house to protect me from bankruptcy. I wanted to tell you the truth, but you said you could never respect a man who wasn't born into wealth, so I... I let you believe what you wanted to believe."

"You lied to me!" Victoria screamed, abandoning all pretense of aristocratic composure as she shoved Steven backward against the glass door. "You trapped me! You made me marry a fraud! My entire life, my social standing, my circle—it’s all built on a lie funded by a woman who looks like she belongs behind a cash register at a grocery store!"

"That's enough," Eric Vance intervened sharply, stepping between the hysterical couple and holding out a formal document toward Steven. "Mr. Morrison, theatrics and marital disputes do not suspend federal property law. Here is the formal writ of possession and the order for immediate vacation of premises. You have sixty minutes to collect your immediate family, your clothing, and your personal effects. The locks are being changed at 9:00 AM sharp by the court-appointed locksmith currently pulling up behind the sheriff's cruisers."

True to his word, a battered white van with "County Lock & Key" emblazoned on the side rolled past the cluster of luxury cars and parked neatly right behind Eleanor’s Bentley, effectively blocking her in. A burly man in a heavy utility belt stepped out of the van, carrying a large metal toolbox filled with specialized hardware, and walked steadily toward the front door.

"You can't do this!" Eleanor shrieked, marching down the steps to block the locksmith's path. "Do you know who my husband is? He sits on the municipal zoning board! You will lose your license before the sun sets today if you take one more step toward this door!"

The locksmith didn't even break his stride. He simply flashed a laminated county badge in Eleanor’s face and walked straight past her, standing directly beside Eric Vance.

"County warrant, ma'am," the locksmith said flatly. "Property owner has full legal authorization. Move out of the way or get charged with obstruction of justice."

Steven watched the entire scene unfold with a dead, hollow look in his eyes. The grand illusion was over. The ten-million-dollar castle was nothing more than a cage of glass, and the key had just been permanently thrown away.
