Chapter 9 - The Invitation

The morning sun cast a golden glow across the polished oak floors of Gwen’s Costa Mesa office suite. The brass plaque beside the double doors read Vance Event & Strategic Consulting, gleaming proudly under the lobby lights.

Gwen sat at her custom walnut desk, reviewing architectural blueprints for an upcoming high-end charity gala she was producing for the Orange County Children’s Hospital—her first major non-profit contract that didn't involve overbearing in-laws, ungrateful relatives, or budget spreadsheets designed to hide embezzlement.

Her assistant, a sharp and energetic young woman named Maya, tapped softly on the open door before stepping inside with a stack of morning mail.

“Good morning, Gwen. Here are the final RSVP numbers for the hospital gala. We’re officially sold out at four hundred attendees, and the media sponsors have confirmed live coverage,” Maya reported with an enthusiastic smile.

“That’s fantastic, Maya. Make sure the catering team has the dietary restriction logs locked down by tomorrow afternoon,” Gwen replied, signing a stack of vendor contracts.

“Will do,” Maya said, setting a single square envelope on top of the pile. “Oh, and this came in the mail about an hour ago. It was forwarded from your old Anaheim address.”

Gwen glanced down at the envelope. It was heavy, cream-colored linen paper, embossed with an elegant silver script that looked vaguely familiar, though she couldn’t immediately place it. She picked it up, turned it over, and saw the return address: The Newport Beach Yacht Club.

She sliced open the flap and pulled out a heavy cardstock invitation.

You are cordially invited to the annual Charity Winter Gala, hosted by the Board of Directors of the Newport Beach Heritage Foundation.

Scanning down the list of honorary committee members, Gwen’s eyes paused on a familiar name near the bottom: Evelyn Dupont, Chairperson.

Beneath the invitation was a handwritten note scrawled on matching stationery:

Dear Gwen,

I know this invitation comes as a surprise, but after what happened last year at the community center, our entire social circle has looked at things through a very different lens. Many of us realized how terribly you were treated, and how much dignity you maintained while carrying a burden that never belonged to you. The board would be honored if you would attend as our guest of honor, and perhaps speak for ten minutes on financial transparency and corporate ethics in modern event management.

Sincerely,

Evelyn Dupont.

Gwen stared at the card for a few seconds, a faint, amused smile touching the corners of her lips. A year ago, an invitation from Evelyn Dupont would have represented the pinnacle of social acceptance in a world where Gwen was expected to smile, nod, and finance everyone else’s illusions.

Now, it was just another event—one she was qualified to run better than anyone else in the room.

May you like

She picked up a pen, flipped the invitation over, and wrote a brief response on the back.
