Chapter 6 - The North Shore Estate

The wind sweeping off Lake Michigan carried a bitter, freezing bite that cut right through my heavy wool coat, but I barely felt the cold.

Inside the back of an unmarked Oakridge Police surveillance van parked half a mile down the winding private access road, the banks of digital monitors glowed with eerie, monochromatic light. Audio feeds hissed softly through the speakers, and thermal imaging maps mapped out the sprawling, fortress-like stone estate belonging to Arthur Vance.

“We’re seventy minutes out from the scheduled meeting time,” Officer Davis reported, tapping away at a portable laptop console. He had insisted on joining the tactical team, wearing a heavy tactical vest over his uniform. “Our decoy vehicle—an exact replica of Christopher’s sedan driven by an undercover state trooper—just passed the security gatehouse at the perimeter.”

I stared at the central monitor, where a live video feed from a drone hovered silently a thousand feet above the estate, capturing the sprawling main manor house, the private helicopter pad, and the dark, churning waters of the lake crashing against the rocky shoreline.

Detective Miller walked over, handing me a steaming paper cup of black coffee. “You should try to rest, Sarah. Once the operation starts, things are going to move fast.”

“I can’t rest, Detective,” I said, taking the cup but keeping my eyes glued to the screen. “My son is staying at a secure safe house under armed guard, and the man who tried to murder him is sitting inside that fortress right now, believing he’s won. I need to see this through to the end.”

Miller nodded sympathetically, pulling up a stool beside me. “Just remember, our objective tonight isn't to confront Arthur face-to-face. It’s to secure a confession, capture undeniable digital proof of his involvement in Christopher’s crimes and the financial extortion scheme, and hand it to federal prosecutors before he realizes it’s a sting.”

“What if he doesn't confess?” I asked quietly.

“Then we have the bank transfers, the shell corporation ownership papers linking him directly to Apex Holdings, and the corrupt cop who poisoned Christopher,” Miller replied firmly. “It’s more than enough to issue an airtight federal arrest warrant. But getting him on tape admitting to the plot is the final nail in the coffin.”

Outside the van, the radio receiver crackled to life.

“Command, this is Vanguard-1. Decoy vehicle has reached the main portico. Suspect is exiting the house to greet the driver.”

On the monitor, a sleek exterior security camera angle flickered to life. The heavy oak double doors of the grand manor swung open, and a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive cashmere overcoat stepped out onto the porch.

Even through the grainy night-vision lens, Arthur Vance exuded an aura of untouchable arrogance. He didn't look like a criminal hiding from the law; he looked like a king greeting a servant.

He walked down the stone steps toward the undercover sedan, leaning casually against the passenger side window as the driver rolled it down.

Through the directional audio mic aimed at the vehicle, Arthur’s voice drifted clearly into the surveillance van, broadcasting through our headphones.

“It’s about time, Christopher,” Arthur’s smooth, patrician voice echoed through the speakers. “Did you take care of the loose ends at the house like we discussed?”

Inside the van, I held my breath, gripping the edge of the metal console so hard my fingernails dug into the surface.

On the screen, the undercover trooper—acting his part to perfection—spoke in a low, modified tone matching Christopher’s cadence. “It’s done, Arthur. Both of them are gone. But there’s a complication with the insurance payout. I need you to sign off on the secondary escrow release before the federal audit flags the account.”

Arthur let out a soft, dismissive chuckle. “Always whining about details. Hand me the tablet. Let’s get this over with so I can pour a glass of scotch and forget this entire miserable family ever existed.”

A cold, electric thrill surged through my veins.

He had just said it on an unencrypted audio feed monitored by law enforcement. He had just confessed to the entire conspiracy on tape.

“We have him,” Detective Miller whispered, her hand hovering over the encrypted transmission button to alert the tactical assault teams positioned around the perimeter. “All units, move in. Execute the sting.”
