Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Leverage

The man in the charcoal suit didn't flinch. He didn't raise his hands, nor did he make a sudden move toward the weapon holstered beneath his tailored jacket. Instead, a slow, condescending smile spread across his face as he turned his head slightly toward the doorway, as if waiting for an invisible cue.
"You think this is about the money, Richard?" the man asked calmly, his eyes locking onto mine with an unsettling lack of fear. "You think Arthur’s little charred ledger is the most valuable asset in this room?"
Before I could process his words, a soft click echoed from behind me in the hallway.
A cold piece of steel pressed firmly against the back of my skull.
"Drop the weapon, Mr. Vance," a second voice whispered in my ear—cool, feminine, and terrifyingly familiar. "Unless you want your wife to watch her husband and her newborn son join her father in an unmarked grave."
My muscles locked instantly. Every drop of blood in my body seemed to freeze in place. I slowly lowered the barrel of my gun toward the floor, my mind struggling to process the impossible voice whispering just behind my shoulder.
I turned my head slightly, my eyes darting toward the hallway mirror. Standing right behind me, holding a suppressed pistol with professional, unshakable precision, wasn't a Syndicate assassin or an unknown mercenary.
It was our trusted family nanny, who had lived under our roof for three years, holding the keys to our lives in the palm of her hand.
Sarah let out a muffled, desperate scream from the corner, thrashing violently against the zip-ties binding her wrists to the rocking chair as the harsh reality crashed down around us. The breach hadn't come from an external hack. The Trojan horse had been living inside our home every single day, watching, waiting, and transmitting our every move directly to the Syndicate.
"You're making a terrible mistake," I managed to say through clenched teeth, my voice shaking with restrained fury as the cold steel remained pressed against the back of my head. "The flash drive is in my pocket. If I die here, the unredacted files go straight to the Department of Justice within the hour."
The man in the charcoal suit chuckled softly, stepping away from Leo’s crib and walking slowly toward me, his polished dress shoes clicking against the hardwood floor.
"Let me tell you a secret about federal investigations, Richard," he said smoothly, stopping just an arm's length away and reaching out to pluck the encrypted flash drive effortlessly from my jacket pocket. "By the time the Department of Justice opens those files, everyone who knows the truth about this house will already be dead, and your entire family will be remembered as the tragic victims of a deranged domestic dispute."

He slipped the flash drive into his pocket, turned on his heel, and walked toward the open window, where a tactical rope ladder dangled from the roofline.
"Tie them up," the man ordered quietly to the nanny behind me, stepping out onto the ledge and disappearing into the morning mist. "And burn the house down before you leave."
