Chapter 7 - The Awakening in Room 404

I left the holding cell without looking back, the heavy metal door slamming shut behind me with a finality that echoed down the precinct hallway. My phone buzzed in my pocket just as I stepped out into the crisp morning air. I pulled it out, expecting another call from the detectives, but the screen displayed a direct text message from Dr. Vance at St. Jude’s Hospital: “Mr. Miller. Your wife is awake. Come back immediately.”
The world around me shifted into high gear. I didn't wait for a cab; I sprinted the four blocks back to the hospital, my boots pounding against the pavement, the cold wind stinging my face.
When I pushed open the door to Room 404, the harsh clinical lighting of the morning felt softer, filtered through the white curtains framing the window. Emily was lying propped up against a stack of pillows, her face still pale and exhausted, her lips dry, but her eyes—those bright, familiar eyes I loved more than life itself—were open and looking directly toward the door.
“Emily,” I choked out, stumbling across the room and dropping to my knees beside her bed.
I reached out with trembling hands, gently taking her fragile fingers in mine, pressing them against my face as the tears I had held back all morning finally broke free.
“Ethan,” she whispered, her voice rough, raspy, and barely audible, like dry paper scraping together. “Our baby... where is our baby?”
“He’s okay, Em,” I wept, kissing her knuckles over and over again. “He’s in the NICU. He’s breathing on his own, his fever broke, and the doctors are taking care of him. He’s going to be fine. I promise you, he’s going to be fine.”
Emily let out a long, shuddering sigh, closing her eyes as a single tear traced a clean path down her hollow cheek. “I tried... Ethan, I tried so hard to get up. My body wouldn't listen to me. Every time I called out, your mother... your mother told me I was just being weak.”
“I know, baby. I know,” I murmured, leaning forward to press my forehead gently against her shoulder. “It’s over. They’re gone. The police arrested them this morning.”
Emily opened her eyes, looking down at me with a mix of shock and profound relief. “Arrested them?”
“They’re facing felony charges for neglect,” I said firmly, my jaw tightening. “And we have the proof. They hid a camera in our hallway, Em. We heard everything they said while you were lying here dying.”
For a long moment, neither of us spoke. We just held onto each other, anchoring ourselves against the storm that had tried to tear our family apart. The nightmare was far from over—Noah was still recovering down the hall, and the long road of legal battles and emotional healing lay ahead of us like a steep, unclimbed mountain.

“We’re going to get through this,” Emily whispered, her fingers tightening around mine with a sudden, returning strength. “The three of us.”
“The three of us,” I repeated, smiling through my tears.
