Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Verdict

The heavy wooden door of Room 412 splintered down the middle with a deafening crash as two massive security guards forced the deadbolt clean out of the frame. They flooded into the room, their dark navy uniforms and heavy boots filling the small space instantly, their eyes locking onto me with aggressive determination.
“Step away from the patient! Put your hands behind your back right now!” the lead guard shouted, drawing a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt and advancing toward me.
I didn't move. I stood my ground beside Elodie’s bed, my hand firmly clasping the encrypted pocket drive in my coat pocket. Behind the guards, a familiar figure stepped into the doorway—not Dr. Harrison, but a tall, imposing man in a sharp charcoal federal suit, wearing a gold badge clipped to his lapel.
“Hold your positions,” the federal agent commanded, his deep, authoritative voice cutting through the tension of the room like a razor.
The security guards froze instantly, turning their heads in confusion. Katherine’s triumphant smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, her sharp hazel eyes narrowing as she studied the federal badge.
“Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Healthcare Fraud and Corporate Compliance Division,” the man announced, stepping fully into the room and flashing a formal identification folder. He turned his gaze directly toward my mother. “Katherine Vance, you are under federal arrest for illicit pharmaceutical experimentation, unauthorized clinical drug trials on a minor, and conspiracy to commit institutional fraud.”
The color drained entirely from Katherine’s face, leaving her looking like a marble statue in the sterile white light of the hospital room. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.
“That’s... that’s absurd,” Katherine stammered, her voice losing its icy authority for the first time. “I am a primary benefactor of this institution! You have no jurisdiction—this is a private medical matter!”
“It stopped being a medical matter the moment your subsidiary uploaded encrypted clinical trial logs of V-94-Beta onto an unapproved patient without parental consent or FDA oversight,” Agent Miller replied coolly, nodding toward the doorway behind him.
As Agent Miller stepped aside, two local police detectives walked into the room, flanked by an unexpected ally: Nurse Clara. Clara looked nervous, but her posture was steady, her eyes fixed firmly on Katherine with a quiet, vindictive satisfaction.
“Clara downloaded the complete administrative audit trail and the secondary encrypted server backups to my office secure terminal thirty minutes ago,” Agent Miller explained, looking at me with a respectful nod. “Your cousin Marcus contacted our downtown field office via an emergency dead-man switch right before his signal was jammed at the waterfront. He ensured the data reached federal servers before your security detail intercepted him.”
“Marcus...” I breathed, a wave of immense relief washing over me. “Is he safe?”
“He’s bruised, but he’s in federal protective custody,” Agent Miller assured me gently. He turned his attention back to my mother, who was now being fitted with cold steel handcuffs by the federal marshals.
“You can’t do this to me! I built this empire! You’re destroying everything your grandfather worked for!” Katherine shrieked, thrashing against the marshals as they hauled her backward toward the shattered doorway, her face twisted in a mask of pure, venomous hatred. She glared at me over her shoulder as they dragged her out into the hallway. “You will never escape me, Chloe! You hear me?! Never!”
Her furious screams echoed down the corridor, growing fainter and fainter until the heavy glass doors of the elevator shut, sealing her fate in absolute silence.
The room grew very quiet. The harsh fluorescent lights hummed softly, and the steady, rhythmic hiss of Elodie’s oxygen machine returned to its peaceful cadence.
Dr. Harrison slipped quietly into the room behind the federal agents, looking pale, sweating profusely, and visibly trembling as he realized his own complicity in the cover-up was about to be investigated. Agent Miller gave him a long, hard look that sent the doctor scurrying backward out of the room without a single word.
I sank down onto the edge of Elodie’s bed, my knees finally giving out under the weight of the past twenty-four hours. Tears of pure exhaustion, relief, and vindication spilled over my eyelashes and traced warm paths down my dirt-stained cheeks.
Elodie reached out a small, warm hand, gently wiping a tear from my cheek with her fingertips.
“Are the bad people gone, Mommy?” she whispered softly, her eyes wide and trusting.

I leaned down, pressing my forehead against hers, breathing in the sweet scent of her hair, knowing that the nightmare was finally, truly over.
“Yes, baby,” I whispered back, holding her close as the morning sunlight finally broke through the stormy clouds outside the hospital window, casting a warm, golden glow across Room 412. “They’re gone for good. And we are finally, truly safe.”
