Chapter 8 - The Federal Agents in the Hallway

The pounding on the front door shook the glass panels beside the entryway, shattering the fragile illusion that I could quietly untangle the mess of my own life before the world caught up.
I stood up slowly from the floor of the study, the heavy ledger still clutched in my left hand and the black encrypted thumb drive gripped tightly in my right. The red indicator light on the thumb drive pulsed with a faint, hypnotic rhythm in the dark room.
“Open the door or we will breach!” the voice commanded again, followed by the heavy clank of tactical gear shifting against the porch railing.
I walked out of the study, crossed the hardwood floor of the living room, and twisted the deadbolt. I pulled the heavy wood door inward, revealing two men in dark tactical vests emblazoned with yellow FBI lettering, flanked by a local police officer I recognized from the ER.
The lead agent—a tall, sharp-featured man with close-cropped gray hair and cold, calculating eyes—stepped across the threshold without waiting for an invitation. He flashed a laminated federal badge.
“Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Division,” he said, his voice flat and unyielding. “Are you Dr. Claire Bennett?”
“I am,” I replied, my voice remarkably steady given the chaos swirling around me. I didn't step back; instead, I raised my hands slightly so they could see what I was holding. “And you’re looking for this.”
Agent Miller’s eyes dropped instantly to the ledger and the thumb drive in my hands. A flicker of surprise crossed his professional facade before he gestured to the two agents behind him to secure the perimeter.
“Mr. Bennett is currently recovering under police guard at St. Jude’s Hospital following his surgical stabilization,” Agent Miller said, stepping closer as he pulled a pair of latex gloves from his pocket. “Our digital forensics team flagged a series of anomalous wire transfers originating from hospital procurement accounts routed through domestic shell corporations. All roads led directly to your address.”
“He kept it in his home office,” I said quietly, extending the ledger and the drive toward him. “He confessed to me at the hospital less than an hour ago. He used his second identity—and a second wife—to launder the funds.”
Agent Miller carefully took the items from my hands, slipping them into an evidence bag. “A second wife, Dr. Bennett?”

“Chloe Vance,” I said, the name tasting bitter on my tongue. “She’s five months pregnant, and she had no idea she was being used as a corporate decoy. Ethan told her he was getting a divorce from me.”
The federal agent exchanged a sharp look with the officer beside him, making a mental note on his digital pad. “Well, Mr. Bennett’s legal troubles just escalated significantly. Embezzlement and fraud across interstate medical networks carry a mandatory federal prison sentence. His little medical emergency in the ER tonight was the best thing that could have happened to us—it kept him from destroying the physical ledger before we could execute the raid.”
