Chapter 2 - The Price of a Secret

The photograph burned into my retinas like a branding iron. Four years of mourning, four years of late-night tears, four years of telling myself that my daughter and I were surviving a tragic, cruel twist of fate—all of it shattered into a million jagged pieces by a single piece of glossy cardstock sliding across an Italian restaurant table.

"He's... he's alive," I breathed, the words tasting like ash and iron on my tongue. The grief that had anchored my identity for half a decade evaporated instantly, replaced by a cold, searing fury that burned hotter than any fire I had ever known.

"Very much alive," Dominic confirmed, his tone dangerously calm. He sat back down in the booth, resting his elbows on the table, studying my face with a clinical, unreadable gaze. "In fact, Mr. Vance has been operating under a new corporate identity in the Cayman Islands, funded largely by the assets he liquidated before staging his little midnight swim off the bridge."

I stared at the photo, my thumb tracing the edge of the paper where Julian’s smiling face mocked me. All those nights I spent second-guessing myself, wondering if I had been a good enough wife, wondering why he had left us with nothing but a mortgage and a crib to build alone. He hadn't died. He had abandoned us. He had traded his wife and unborn child for a clean slate and a suitcase full of stolen cash.

"Why?" I choked out, looking up to meet Dominic's dark, piercing eyes. "Why are you telling me this? You're... you're Dominic Moretti. People in the city whisper your name in dark corners. What does a ghost story from my past have to do with the head of the Moretti family?"

Dominic picked up his cold coffee cup, swirling the dark liquid before setting it back down untouched. "Because, Clara, your daughter walked into my private dining room tonight, looked me dead in the eye, and told me that her mommy works seventy hours a week at St. Catherine's ER just to keep a roof over her head, while her father—the man who owes my organization three million dollars—has been living like a king in the sun."

He leaned forward, lowering his voice until it was barely a whisper above the restaurant's ambient hum.

"Debt doesn't die when a man fakes his own death, Clara. Especially not a debt owed to me. And when my men tracked down his new offshore accounts this afternoon, we discovered something fascinating. The primary beneficiary on his hidden corporate holdings isn't his blonde companion in Miami. It's a revocable trust set up under a name your daughter happened to mention over hot chocolate."

My breath caught. "Lily?"

"Not quite," Dominic said, a grim, humorless shadow passing over his features. "The trust is set up in your name, Clara. Which means, legally speaking, the moment Julian’s hidden assets are frozen and seized by federal or private warrant... half of that stolen empire belongs to you as his legally wedded, un-divorced wife."

I staggered backward mentally. A multi-million-dollar fortune. Stolen money. Tied to a mafia syndicate and a husband who had left me to drown in debt and double shifts.

"I don't want his money," I whispered fiercely, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and disbelief. "I want nothing to do with him."

"That's a noble sentiment," Dominic replied, his eyes narrowing slightly with a dangerous glint of respect. "Unfortunately, Mr. Vance has recently decided that loose ends need to be tied up. And according to my intelligence sources, he's booked a flight back to New York. Not to visit his daughter. But to ensure that his forgotten wife doesn't accidentally stumble onto the truth."
