Chapter 8 - The Blueprint for Tomorrow

Back in Charlotte, the autumn air was crisp and invigorating. From my corner office on the top floor of Rowan Holdings, the view of the city skyline was no longer just a reminder of corporate ambition—it was a monument to resilience.

David Cole sat across from my minimalist glass desk, reviewing a final stack of international partnership agreements.

“Well, Claire, the dust has finally settled,” David said, signing his name with a smooth, fountain-pen stroke and handing the papers back to me. “Grant’s federal indictment trial wrapped up this morning. He took the plea deal—seven and a half years at a medium-security federal correctional facility in West Virginia. No parole.”

I closed the folder, running my hand smoothly over the embossed black-and-silver cover bearing the Rowan Holdings crest.

“And Sabrina?” I asked, my voice completely devoid of malice, feeling only the detached curiosity of an engineer observing a collapsed structure.

“Living in Atlanta, working as a junior accounts clerk for her uncle, and paying back her legal debts through a strict court-mandated garnishment schedule,” David replied, leaning back in his chair with a slight, appreciative smile. “Her father cut her off completely. Total social exile.”

I nodded slowly, looking out the floor-to-ceiling glass window toward the bustling streets below.

“It’s amazing how fast an empire crumbles when it’s built on lies,” I mused softly.

“An empire only stands as strong as its foundation, Claire,” David countered, looking at me with deep, professional respect. “And you were always the one who poured the concrete.”

My phone buzzed on the desk. I glanced down at the screen—an encrypted notification from our European architectural development partners confirming that our new sustainable luxury housing initiative in Zurich had officially cleared zoning review.

“Speaking of foundations,” I said, looking back up at David with a sharp, confident smile, “we have an international press conference in twenty minutes to announce our expansion into the European market. Are you ready to step out of the courtroom and into the global spotlight, counselor?”

David laughed, standing up and adjusting his suit jacket.

“Claire, after surviving your divorce and a hostile corporate restructuring in the same month, standing in front of a few dozen financial journalists is practically a vacation.”

“Good,” I said, standing up and smoothing down the lapel of my tailored navy blazer. “Let’s go show them how a real foundation is built.”
