Chapter 7 - The Ledger in the Safe

I stared up at him, my breath catching in my throat. “You know? You knew someone was betraying you, and you brought me here? You let me walk right into the middle of a war zone?”
“I didn't bring you into a war zone, Alina. The war zone was already built around us the day I stepped into the Chicago shipping market,” Dorian said, his thumbs tracing the line of my jaw with a desperate tenderness that clashed violently with the harsh reality of his words. He turned away, walking toward the large, custom-built painting that hung on the far wall of the master bedroom. He reached behind the canvas, flicked a hidden toggle switch, and pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner set flush into the drywall.
With a heavy, mechanical clack, the wall panel slid back, revealing a heavy digital safe recessed into the brickwork.
Dorian punched in a sequence of numbers, spun the heavy steel dial, and pulled the door open. He didn't reach for a gun or stacks of cash. Instead, he pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger and a single manila file folder stamped with a red confidential seal.
“For six months, I haven't been sleeping at the office because of Moretti,” Dorian said, walking back toward me and laying the ledger open on the edge of the king-sized bed. “I’ve been tracking a silent drain on our primary investment accounts—millions of dollars siphoned through shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands. Someone inside my executive committee has been selling my acquisitions data to the syndicate.”
I looked down at the pages covered in columns of figures, company names, and digital routing hashes. My eyes scanned the names at the bottom of the authorization forms until my breath hitched.
“Caleb?” I whispered, looking up at Dorian in horror. “Your other head of security... your administrative chief?”
“Caleb has been with me for eight years,” Dorian said grimly. “Or so I thought. Two weeks ago, my forensic accountants flagged an anomaly in the payroll transfers for the Lincoln Park estate staff. The signature authorizing the secondary offshore wire wasn't mine. It was forged.”
“And Moretti knowing about the divorce...” The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying speed. “Caleb was at the law office downtown this morning. He was the one who handed you the documents before we went in.”
Dorian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. “He was the only one who knew the exact timing of our meeting. Which means Caleb isn't just selling shipping routes to Moretti. He’s been tracking the dissolution of our marriage, hoping to use your vulnerability as leverage to break my concentration before the board vote next month.”
The reality of what had almost happened washed over me in a cold wave. While I had spent the last six months drowning in the grief of a dying marriage—believing Dorian had simply grown cold, distant, and tired of me—he had been fighting a silent, bloody war to keep our entire lives from collapsing around us, protecting me by keeping me at arm's length so my name wouldn't appear on any federal or syndicate target lists.
“You pushed me away,” I whispered, tears blurring the numbers on the ledger page. “You stopped coming home, you stopped touching me... not because you stopped loving me, but because you were trying to keep me off the board.”
Dorian reached out, his hand sliding behind my neck, pulling me gently against his chest until my face was buried in the warm fabric of his shirt.

“I pushed you away because the moment Moretti or any of those animals realized how much I cared about you, they would have used you to put a gun to my head,” Dorian murmured, his voice cracking just enough to reveal the immense, terrifying weight he had been carrying alone. “I thought if we divorced—if legally severed ties—you’d be safe in a condo downtown, far away from my empire. I was going to give you half my holdings, walk away, and watch over you from the shadows.”
“I don't want half your holdings, Dorian,” I choked out, wrapping my arms around his waist and gripping his shirt as hard as I could. “I want you. And right now... we’re having a baby.”
