Chapter 2 - Inside the Fortress

The ride across the city felt like descending into a different dimension. The sleek black SUV glided over the asphalt with terrifying smoothness, insulated from the bumps, potholes, and chaotic noises of the streets I knew so well. Outside the tinted bulletproof windows, the neon signs of downtown blurred into streaks of red and blue light, eventually giving way to towering wrought-iron gates, dense pine forests, and a sprawling stone estate perched high on a private hill overlooking the bay.
I sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, rigid and silent, while a driver in a tailored suit kept his eyes fixed strictly on the road. Every muscle in my body was coiled tight. I had spent the last six months sleeping on benches, dodging city sweepers, and wondering where my next cup of coffee would come from. Now, I was being driven into the fortress of a man police detectives whispered about only behind closed doors.
When the SUV rolled to a halt in front of a grand marble portico, the doors opened instantly. Another guard stood waiting, his expression professional and completely devoid of emotion.
"Step out, please, Ms. Maya," he said, holding his hand out toward the open door.
I swallowed hard, stepped out onto the polished cobblestone courtyard, and immediately felt dwarfed by the massive double doors of the mansion. Tall stone pillars rose up into the night sky, and soft amber lights illuminated sprawling gardens that looked like something out of a European magazine.
Moments later, the second SUV pulled up. Vincent stepped out, holding Noah, who had fallen asleep against his father's shoulder, his small fist still tangled in the fabric of Vincent's coat. Seeing the fierce, unyielding mafia boss carry a sleeping child with such tender, desperate care was a jarring contradiction that scrambled my thoughts.
"Follow me," Vincent said quietly, walking past me toward the grand entrance.
I followed because I had no choice. The heavy oak doors swung open automatically, revealing a cavernous foyer with a sweeping double staircase, gleaming marble floors, and a crystal chandelier that caught the light like frozen stars. But the breathtaking luxury didn't impress me; it only made me feel more out of place in my stained jacket and torn jeans.
A middle-aged woman with silver-streaked hair and a crisp black dress hurried out from a hallway, her eyes wide with shock as she saw Vincent carrying Noah.
"Mr. Moretti! Oh, thank heavens—you found him—wait, is he—?"
"He's asleep, Mrs. Gable," Vincent interrupted in a low, controlled voice. "And he spoke. He spoke to her."
Mrs. Gable stopped dead in her tracks. Her gaze snapped from Vincent to me. Her hands flew to her mouth, and tears welled up in her eyes instantly. She looked at me not with suspicion, but with a reverence that felt terrifyingly heavy.
"Prepare the east wing suite," Vincent ordered, walking toward the grand staircase. "And call Dr. Vance. Tell him to come immediately, quietly through the private gate."
"Yes, Mr. Moretti. Right away." Mrs. Gable bowed her head slightly before rushing off down the hall, casting one more wondering look in my direction.
Vincent paused on the second landing, turning back to look down at me where I stood awkwardly near the base of the stairs. "Come up, Maya. You don't need to stand down there like a prisoner."
"I'm not a prisoner, right?" I asked, my voice echoing slightly in the vast open space.
Vincent gave a faint, humorless smile that didn't reach his eyes. "If you were a prisoner, Ms. Maya, you wouldn't be standing in my foyer. You'd be in the lower level. Consider yourself an honored, heavily guarded guest."

That didn't comfort me at all.
