Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Spring arrived in Chicago slowly, melting the heavy winter snowdrifts into rushing streams of water along the curbs and bringing pale green buds back to the oak trees in our front yard.

Life had returned to a rhythm of ordinary, beautiful normalcy.

Mark had fully recovered from his health scare, returning to his work with a renewed focus and a profound appreciation for the moments that truly mattered. Lily was back in school, her bright brown curls bouncing as she carried her pink backpack to the bus stop every morning, her laugh ringing out clear and unburdened across the lawn. Maya was running around the backyard, chasing butterflies with a plastic net and chattering away in a language only three-year-olds can master.

We never heard from my parents again. Rumors filtered through extended family grapevine months later that they had sold off what little personal belongings they had left and moved into a cramped, run-down apartment on the far south side of the city—a world away from the country clubs and gated estates they had once worshipped. They were ghosts of a life we had successfully left behind.

And as for Victor, and the shadow empire that had silently watched over our darkest hour—they remained just that: shadows. A quiet, unseen shield standing at the edges of our world, ensuring that no harm would ever reach my daughters again.

On a warm Saturday morning in late May, I stood on our front porch with a mug of steaming coffee in my hand, watching Mark push Maya on the backyard swing while Lily practiced cartwheels on the grass.

The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm, golden glow across our home.

Mark looked up, catching my eye across the yard. He smiled—a wide, unburdened smile that reached all the way to his eyes—and waved me over.

May you like

I set my mug down on the porch railing and walked across the fresh green grass toward my family, stepping into the sunlight with a light heart and a future that belonged entirely to us.

The nightmare was over. Our story was just beginning.
