Chapter 7 - The Harbor Safehouse

The harbor safehouse smelled of old salt, diesel fuel, and clean linen. It was an abandoned brick warehouse retrofitted with reinforced steel doors and state-of-the-art medical equipment. As soon as Viktor pulled the armored Mercedes inside the garage bay, three paramedics rushed out with a gurney, gently lifting Daniel inside to begin IV fluids and stabilize his dangerously low vitals.

Mommy and I sat together on a leather couch in the corner of the reinforced office upstairs. A young medic had wrapped a clean bandage around Mommy’s wrist where the Vanguard guards had bruised her, and handed me a warm mug of hot chocolate with tiny marshmallows floating on top.

I blew gently on the steam, looking around the room. "Mommy, are the bad people going to find us here?"

Mommy stroked my hair, her eyes heavy with worry as she stared toward the heavy steel entrance downstairs. "No, sweetie. Mr. Mercer won't let anyone hurt us. He keeps his promises."

Just then, the heavy iron door of the warehouse slammed open.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the concrete floor. Viktor immediately drew his weapon, stepping in front of the office door, but lowered it instantly as a tall, broad-shouldered man stepped into the light.

It wasn't Andrew.

It was a man I had never seen before. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that looked completely out of place in a harbor warehouse, and a silver ring bearing a strange, interlocking snake crest gleamed on his right index finger. His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed, and his sharp, aquiline nose gave him the appearance of an aristocratic falcon.

"Viktor," the man said smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless, patrician command. "Put the hardware away. It's unbecoming of men in our line of work."

"Mr. Vance," Viktor muttered, his jaw tightening. "You shouldn't be here. The entire perimeter is hot."

"The perimeter is only hot because Andrew is playing chess with a ghost," the man—Vance—replied, stepping further into the room and glancing briefly toward the medical bay where Daniel was resting. He then turned his dark, calculating eyes toward Mommy and me.

"So. This is the little nurse and her daughter who accidentally unraveled nine years of careful deception," Vance said, walking slowly toward our couch. He crouched down so he was eye-level with me, a faint, polite smile touching his lips. "Brave little girl. You gave your five dollars to the wrong monster, or perhaps... the right one."

"Stay away from her," Mommy warned, placing herself protectively between Vance and me.

Vance stood back up, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "Relax, Ms. Callahan. I am not your enemy. In fact, I am the man who funded your hospital's charity wing for five years. More importantly, I am the man who knows that Victoria Mercer’s little game has gone on far too long."

"What do you want, Vance?" Viktor demanded, stepping between Vance and the couch.

"I want what Andrew wants," Vance smiled coldly. "To see the board burn. But time is running out. Victoria has already activated the federal strike teams, and she’s heading straight for Andrew's primary estate on the cliffs. She thinks she's trapping him."

"And she's walking right into a slaughter," Viktor realized, his eyes widening.
