Chapter 5 - The Mastermind's Ledger

"Well, well, well," Marcus said, his voice smooth and cultured, carrying easily across the damp concrete basin. He looked at me with an expression of mild, almost paternal disappointment, as if I were a wayward employee who had missed a quarterly deadline. "I always knew you were stubborn, Dominic, but tracking us down into the municipal sewer lines? That’s almost cinematic."
I stepped out from the shadows of the tunnel entrance, keeping my Beretta raised and leveled directly at the center of Marcus’s chest. Marco flanked me instantly, his Sig Sauer tracking the two tactical operatives holding Clara.
"Let her go, Marcus," I said, every word vibrating with lethal restraint. "You’ve played your game. It’s over."
Marcus chuckled softly, pulling a silver cigar cutter from his pocket and casually rolling an unlit Cuban cigar between his fingers. "Over? Dominic, my dear friend, it hasn't even begun. You really think this is about a corporate squabble or a forged photograph from eight years ago?"
"You stole my life," I snarled, taking a slow step forward. "You lied to me about Elena. You funneled my money to keep her hidden, and then you sent your clean-up crew to my home."
"I didn't steal your life, Dominic—I saved it," Marcus snapped, his polished facade cracking for a split second, revealing the ruthless corporate predator underneath. "When you fell in love with Elena, you went soft. You started pulling Moretti Logistics out of lucrative international contracts because of your sudden moral awakening. You were going to destroy everything your father built."
Clara twisted violently in the grip of her captor, managing to free her arm. "Liar!" she screamed across the basin, her young voice echoing off the brick walls. "You locked my mom in that room! You're a bad man!"
Marcus glanced at the little girl with a look of cold indifference. "Such a dramatic child. Exactly like her mother." He looked back up at me, a cruel smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "You want to know why I kept her alive all these years, Dominic? Why I allowed her to grow up just a few miles outside the city, funded by your very own accounts?"
"Tell me," I whispered, tightening my finger around the trigger.
"Because a ghost is easy to forget," Marcus said smoothly. "But a living, breathing heir? A daughter who inherits every share of the Moretti empire on her eighteenth birthday? That is a permanent vulnerability."
Marcus raised two fingers toward the upper catwalk hidden in the darkness above the drainage basin.
Before I could process the movement, the harsh glare of four high-powered tactical floodlights clicked on overhead, blinding us instantly. At the same time, the distinct, metallic click of half a dozen assault rifles being unlatched echoed from the upper gantries surrounding the entire chamber.

We were completely surrounded.
"Drop your weapons," Marcus commanded, his voice echoing with absolute finality as he stepped back behind the armored van, pulling Clara tightly in front of him as a human shield. "Drop them now, Dominic, or I let the girl watch your brains paint this concrete wall."
