Chapter 10 - The Federal Shadow

The hallway erupted into a deafening cacophony of gunfire, shattering glass, and splintering wood. Sparks flew as tactical shields absorbed my answering shots, the concussive blast of carbines rattling the air in the narrow corridor.
"Move!" I yelled back over my shoulder, firing a rapid three-round burst that forced Vincent’s lead operative to dive behind a concrete pillar.
Naomi didn't hesitate this time. She scooped Lily up into her arms, grabbing Julie by the jacket, and bolted down the narrow, dimly lit corridor toward the basement service stairs just as a smoke canister bounced across the kitchen floor and began hissing violently.
I backed up toward the doorway, firing suppressive rounds down the hallway until my slide locked back on an empty magazine.
"Drop the gun, Adrian!" Vincent shouted, stepping around the pillar with his weapon leveled directly at my chest, his breath coming in ragged gasps through the acrid smoke. "You've just destroyed four decades of work in five seconds. Your father will have you locked away in a psychiatric ward before the sun comes up."
"My father's empire just went public, Vincent," I said, a cold, hard smile cutting across my face as I tossed the empty pistol onto the floorboards and raised my empty hands. "And the DOJ doesn't put billionaires in psychiatric wards. They put them in cells."
Before Vincent could lunge forward to grab me, the entire building’s electrical grid died with a heavy, subterranean groan. Every light fixture flickered and went black.
In the sudden pitch-black darkness, the sharp, frantic chirping of a dozen high-priority secure satellite phones began ringing simultaneously from the tactical vests of Vincent and his men.
Vincent froze, his hand dropping slowly from his pistol as he pulled his encrypted radio receiver from his belt.
"Sir?" Vincent barked into the comms unit, his voice tight with sudden, unadulterated dread.
A heavy, static-laced voice crackled through the speaker across the dark hallway—not Marcus Senior, but an unfamiliar, high-ranking federal marshal.
“Special Agent Vance, Federal Task Unit 7. The Moretti holdings in Manhattan, Zurich, and the Caymans have been seized under federal asset forfeiture warrants. Step away from the suspects.”
Vincent stared across the dark corridor at me, his eyes wide with a realization that was far more terrifying than any gun barrel.
"It's over, Vincent," I whispered into the dark.
Suddenly, the heavy front entrance doors were blown inward with a tremendous crash, not by syndicate enforcers, but by the blinding floodlights and heavy tactical gear of federal marshals swarming the building from the street.
Amidst the chaos of shouted orders, flashing blue lights, and scrambling operatives, I turned toward the dark service corridor, scanning the shadows for Naomi and Lily.

The hallway was completely empty.
On the floor near the basement door lay a single, forgotten purple crayon.
