Chapter 10 - The Lake Geneva Gates

The SUV lurched violently as the driver whipped the heavy vehicle off the interstate ramp, spraying gravel across the desolate, tree-lined county road. Behind us, the twin beams of our pursuers flickered through the thick pine trees, refusing to lose our trail in the gathering darkness.

"They're matching our speed!" the guard shouted over the roar of the engine. "Sir, they've got side-mounted rifles—they're pulling up alongside!"

A sharp, metallic ping rang out against the armored side panel of our vehicle, followed by a heavy thud.

Maya stirred in her sleep, whimpering softly. Leo instinctively slid closer to Adrian, his small hand slipping into Adrian’s massive palm. Adrian didn't hesitate; he scooped Leo up onto his lap, shielding the boy’s head with his broad shoulder.

"Hold on!" the driver yelled as he slammed the steering wheel hard to the left, sliding the massive SUV through a narrow iron-wrought gate that loomed out of the dark woods.

Heavy stone pillars flashed past, bearing an old iron crest.

Lake Geneva. The Vale estate.

The vehicle raced up the winding, tree-canopied driveway, tires churning up gravel, until it screeched to a halt in front of a sprawling, limestone mansion glowing with warm amber lights from within.

Before the dust had even settled, heavy iron exterior shutters slammed automatically over the lower windows, and a sophisticated perimeter security system hummed to life with a low, electronic chime.

"We're inside," the guard announced, exhaling a ragged breath.

Adrian opened the door, stepping out into the crisp night air, and reached back inside to help me carry the sleeping twins. We hurried up the grand stone steps as the massive front doors swung open automatically, revealing a cavernous, immaculate foyer that looked entirely unchanged from the nightmare I had fled three years ago.

As we stepped inside, the heavy oak doors slammed shut and bolted behind us with a definitive, mechanical thud.

Adrian set Leo down gently, then turned to me, his face grim, exhausted, but completely resolute.

"We're safe here for tonight," Adrian said quietly. "No one gets past these gates without my authorization."

At that exact moment, the mansion's master control panel on the wall chimed loudly, flashing a bright red alert.

Adrian frowned, walking over to the screen. He tapped the interface to bring up the external security camera feed from the outer gates.

On the high-definition monitor, a single, pristine black sedan had pulled up directly in front of the locked iron gates. The driver's side door opened, and a slender woman with dark hair and sharp, venomous features stepped out into the glare of the security lights, looking straight up into the camera lens with a slow, chilling smile.

Celeste.
