Chapter 10 - The Last Call

The voice on the other end of the line was thin, raspy, and stripped of all its former arrogance.

It was Margaret.

My entire body froze. I instinctively pulled the phone slightly away from my ear, staring at the screen as if the plastic casing could bite me.

"I know you're listening," Margaret hissed, the sound of heavy metal doors clanging shut echoing loudly in the background over a prison intercom. "You think you've won everything. You think a billionaire patting you on the head makes you high society."

“Margaret,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady, lacking any trace of the fear that had defined my life for six years. “You’re calling from a holding facility. You have no lawyers, no foundation, and no power left.”

A dry, hacking laugh came through the speaker.

"Power isn't something you lose just because a building gets raided, Emily. The Whitmore family roots run deeper in this city than Richard Bennett’s money ever will. You took my home. You took my legacy. But do you really think my son’s bloodline is going to let a nobody like you walk away with everything?"

My breath hitched. “What are you talking about?”

"Michael had a safety deposit box," Margaret whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "In Zurich. Not listed in the probate records. Not found by your precious billionaire’s auditors. And the key... the key is currently being mailed to someone who won't be nearly as polite as Richard Bennett."

Before I could answer, the line went dead with a sharp, automated click.

A cold chill washed over my skin. I lowered the phone slowly, my hands trembling.

Richard noticed the shift in my posture instantly. He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “Who was that?”

“Margaret,” I whispered, looking up at him with sudden dread. “She said... she said Michael had a safety deposit box in Zurich. That she sent the key to someone else.”

Richard didn't panic. He stood up immediately, walking over to the conference room door and opening it to signal Marcus.

“Marcus, get our international asset-recovery team on the phone with Zurich banking compliance,” Richard commanded sharply. “Find out what was in Michael Whitmore’s unrecorded box before the ink on this injunction is even dry.”

Marcus nodded and dashed down the hall.

Richard turned back to me, his expression hardened into stone. He walked over, kneeling beside my chair, and placed both hands firmly on my shoulders.

“Listen to me, Emily,” Richard said, his voice a low, fierce anchor in the storm. “Margaret is locked in a federal cell. She’s throwing whatever dirt she has left at the wall hoping something sticks. Whatever is in that box in Zurich, we will find it, we will freeze it, and we will crush it.”

I looked past him toward my daughters, who were still laughing and coloring happily by the window, entirely unaware of the new shadow stretching out across our future.

“She’s not just fighting for money anymore, Richard,” I whispered, my heart racing. “She’s fighting for vengeance.”

“Then so am I,” Richard replied, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding promise. “Let her try.”
