Chapter 8 - The Shortcut Through the Dark

The maze of row thirty-five was tighter, the shelves stacked so high and close together that the emergency strobes overhead barely penetrated the gloom.

Margot led the way, her small flashlight cutting frantic arcs through the dust as she ducked beneath sagging cables and vaulted over fallen archive boxes. She knew this floor better than anyone alive; she knew where the floorboards creaked, where the ductwork dipped low enough to crack a skull, and—most importantly—she knew the narrow maintenance crawlway that bypassed the main service corridor entirely.

"Here," she hissed, skidding to a halt beside a rusted metal access panel half-hidden behind a stack of nineteen-nineties payroll ledgers.

Raphael caught up instantly, shoving his pistol back into its holster just long enough to grab the rusted handle of the panel and yank it open with a deafening screech of stressed metal. Pitch-black darkness yawned beyond the opening, smelling of stale air and subterranean dampness.

"This leads straight to the freight elevator landing above the loading dock," Margot whispered, her chest heaving as she shone her light inside. "They have to cross that landing to reach the exterior escape van. If we drop out of the maintenance chute ahead of them, we cut off their only exit."

Raphael didn't hesitate. He thrust his torso into the dark opening first, twisting his broad shoulders through the narrow gap, then reached back down to grab Margot by the wrists and hoist her up effortlessly into the crawlway.

They crawled on their hands and knees through the tight, vibrating metal tunnel, the muffled sound of heavy boots stomping on the concrete floor directly beneath them indicating that the mercenaries were only seconds away.

"Quiet," Raphael breathed, pressing his back against the cool metal of the conduit wall as they reached the service drop.

Through the grated floor vent beneath them, the glaring fluorescent lights of the sub-basement loading dock illuminated two men in tactical gear. One of them was clutching a bleeding shoulder—evidently clipped by Raphael’s return fire—while the other desperately tried to force open the rusted exterior security gate leading to the alleyway above.

"The gate's jammed!" the wounded mercenary hissed in English, his voice echoing up through the vent. "Marcus didn't update the override code! We're locked in!"

"Pick the lock, you idiot, or we're dead meat when Santoro's main detail gets down here!" the other snapped, slamming his fist against the steel bars.

Above the vent, Raphael slowly unscrewed the metal grating with a small multi-tool he had pulled from his pocket, setting the screws aside without a single sound. He drew his Glock once more, checking the chamber with cold, deliberate precision.

He looked down at Margot, who was peering through the gap with her gray notebook clutched tightly in her hand like a weapon.

Raphael gave her a single, silent nod, then dropped feet-first through the open vent straight down into the loading dock behind the trapped killers.
