Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Lies

I stepped forward, my hands trembling as I untied the faded red ribbon holding the file together.

I flipped open the cover. Inside were bank statements, corporate asset transfers, and notarized wills spanning over a decade. But what caught my eye immediately was a high-resolution photocopy of a cashier's check made out for four million dollars, signed with a signature I recognized all too well—my former business partner, Richard Vance.

And right beneath it, a legal trust document designating Callie Cooper as the sole primary heir to the entire estate.

"Richard," I whispered, the name tasting like ash in my mouth. "He was my closest friend. He helped me set up the firm."

"He didn't help you build it, Jack; he used it," Elena said, stepping closer, her voice laced with exhaustion. "My father discovered that Richard was laundering syndicate money through your architectural projects. When my father threatened to go to the federal prosecutor, they staged his heart attack. And when they realized Callie was the primary beneficiary of the family trust that funded your startup capital, they decided the cleanest way to clear the title was to eliminate the bloodline."

I stared at the papers, the horrifying reality crashing down upon me with the force of an avalanche.

Three years ago, when Callie vanished from her bedroom, the police had ruled it a stranger abduction. But nobody had looked at the finances. Nobody had looked at Richard Vance’s sudden, inexplicable rise to corporate dominance right after my daughter disappeared.

"If they wanted her dead," I looked up at Elena, my voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal whisper, "why didn't you let them take her? Why keep her hidden?"

"Because I loved my sister, and I loved my niece," Elena answered fiercely, her eyes locking onto mine with unwavering resolve. "And because I found the backup safe in my father's office before they burned it to the ground. Inside was a dead-man's switch—a cryptographic key that activates only when both Callie and I are verified alive and safe."

She pointed toward the back room of the cabin.

"She's in there, Jack. Your daughter. She remembers you. She remembers the moon mark."

Before I could take a step toward the back door, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the frozen ground outside the cabin—followed instantly by the heavy crunch of tactical boots on the snowy gravel.

Elena’s face went entirely white.

"They're here," she breathed.
