Chapter 10 - The Override Code

"Target acquisition confirmed," Sophie whispered in that flat, robotic monotone, her small fingers digging into the fabric of my sweater with terrifying, unnatural strength. "Initiating secondary containment protocol."

"Sophie, stop it! Look at me, it's Mommy!" I cried, cradling her head against my shoulder as hot tears spilled down my cheeks. "You're safe now, we're going home!"

Before she could speak again, the heavy metal door separating the cargo hold from the cockpit slid open with a sharp click.

A tall man in a dark tailored suit stepped out into the aisle. He had silver-streaked hair, sharp, aristocratic features, and eyes that held the exact same cold, calculating emptiness I had seen in Arthur and Mark.

He wasn't holding a weapon. He was holding a small, black remote device with a single flashing red LED light.

"It's fascinating, isn't it?" the man said smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless authority that cut right through the roar of the jet engines. "How quickly the human mind abandons its chaotic emotional attachments when the proper baseline parameters are applied."

Detective Miller burst through the cargo door behind me, his pistol raised and aimed directly at the man's chest. "Drop the remote! Federal agent, drop it right now or I will fire!"

The man didn't even blink. He looked at Miller with a mild, condescending amusement, his thumb resting casually over the flashing red button on the device.

"You can shoot me, Detective," the man replied calmly, tilting his head. "In fact, you're welcome to try. But before your finger pulls the trigger, you might want to consider what happens when my heart stops beating."

Miller hesitated, his grip tightening on the pistol. "What are you talking about?"

"A dead-man’s switch," the man said softly, a thin smile touching the corners of his lips. "This device is hard-wired into the regional mesh network. The moment my biometric vitals flatline, an automated script executes across four thousand encrypted servers worldwide. Every single experimental file, every baseline telemetry log, and every active subject profile—including your daughter's complete psychological architecture—is instantly wiped clean from every database on earth."

My breath caught in my throat. I clutched Sophie tighter against my chest, my whole body trembling violently. "You're lying..."

"Am I, Mrs. Vance?" the man asked, turning his gaze toward me with chilling gentleness. "Think about it. If our servers vanish, the programming loop inside her brain becomes permanent. She will never wake up. She will spend the rest of her life as a biological shell, reciting code and waiting for an override that will never come."

Miller lowered his weapon by an inch, his face twisted in a mask of agonizing conflict. "Who are you?"

"I am simply a middle management tier in a very large, very necessary corporate ecosystem," the man replied, stepping forward until he was standing just a few feet away from us. "And right now, I'm offering you a very simple choice, Detective."

May you like

He pressed the remote against his palm, the red LED blinking faster, casting a rhythmic, bloody glow across the cabin walls.

"You can arrest me, watch the network self-destruct, and leave your daughter a permanent digital prisoner inside her own mind," the man said quietly. "Or... you can walk off this plane right now, leave the girl with us to complete the final phase of her conditioning, and pretend this entire evening never happened."
